    First registered shoot

The thing to remember is that every other entrant was once in your position and no one but you is interested in your score. If you're in a squad, make sure the others know it's your first time and don't be afraid to ask if you're not sure about anything. Pretty well everyone wants you to have a...

    Oil v grease

Oil and grease aren't interchangeable lubricants so oil is used in some situations and grease in others. I use grease on the knuckle between the action body and the forend as well as the hinge stubs, locking bolt contact area and the choke threads. An occasional drop of oil in the ejector...

Sporting shoots. Your personal accounts. 2022

I too was at Barbury, although I'm not yet working on all cylinders and not really sharp enough yet for a tricky course - which it certainly was. As for the orange clays I agree entirely.  Black would have been fine for the 10 foot looper and the numerous targets in the sky. I don't personally...

    Browning XS Pro Sporter

As I've said here before; if I had to shoot a Browning, that's the one I'd go for. I've only ever tried them in 32" for sporting, but in my hands they feel more substantial than the regular 725 and more nimble than the Pro Sport.

DT10 Bit long in the tooth?

Mine is a Challenger. The Invictus 7 belongs to a AAA sporting shot. The Invictus has some easily replaced bits such as the reversed hinge stubs and the recoil shoulders but everything else is the same as pre Invictus guns. My gun is unmodified and weighs 8lb 3oz most Invictus model weigh...

DT10 Bit long in the tooth?

Yes indeed.  I was referring to later 11s which are similar in weight to the DT10s.  I've done the exact same live shooting comparison with my CG and an Invictus 7. In terms of handling and feel, neither of us could separate them when actually shooting at clays.

DT10 Bit long in the tooth?

If you like the way it shoots for you then go for it. The later DT11s v DT10 scenario is a bit like CG Invictus v CG earlier range. A few marginal differences and buzzwords to please the marketing department but virtually no functional differences and operationally indistinguishable.

    A problem with Napier Ultraclean

If you're using fibre wad shells you could have what's called leading which is literally streaks of lead. These can be tough to shift so after a good soaking with bore cleaner (I use WD40 but only in the bores), a paper towel rammed very tightly down the bore will usually shift it. If the worst...

    Cylinder choke

I thought it reasonable to assume that and also the same muzzle velocity. No. Pellets are slowed by resistance to air and since the smaller pellet has a smaller frontal area it won't slow down quicker than the larger pellet. In this scenario pellet density is what matters and relative mass is...

    Cylinder choke

Well the flaw in the above is that you overlook pellet density. For identical density, wad and shell construction, lighter pellets would behave the same as heavier because they have a smaller diameter. No pellet dispersion by choke chart that I've ever seen has shown nominal pellet percentage...

    Cylinder choke

Hmmm! Not sure the physics is undeniable. What force causes the shot to disperse?
  12. W

    Cylinder choke

Smaller shot gets you more pellets in the zone but theoretically the pattern will be the same size.

    Cylinder choke

It's certainly possible to break long shots with cylinder or skeet but will you always break them?  An open choke will have holes in the pattern at more than about 25yds and  huge holes at 60 yds! If you read this you can see that a 1/2 choke is virtually as good as a cyl at 25yds and miles...

Sporting shoots. Your personal accounts. 2022

So, yesterday being near perfect shooting weather I decided to venture down to Meadowcroft having heard good reports about the much needed layout changes. Some weeks back Robin Heal from Somerset Shooting had run a couple of shoots there and created lots of new shooting positions and the...

    gureni

The simple way to buy one is direct from AngloItalian, but I'm not convinced they do much for recoil. You can fiddle with the weight though if you want to adjust balance but there are cheaper ways of doing that. I don't think they sell many of them and I have seen them pop up occasionally for...

Coaches / Instructors what is a “fair” rate

Hi Rich. You could check with Stephen Nutbeam - if you haven't already - and also Shaun Porter who will meet up at Coley's or Barbury. Shaun's prices are pretty good plus he gets a good rep, and he's not a clock watcher, if you know what I mean.

    Different shells for practice?

Agree with all that but I just wish F Blu were available in 8 shot, as everywhere I look 7.5 is the only size stocked and Italian 7.5 equals UK 7. It's not a deal breaker but I'd much rather have 8s

    Shooting fitness

George has been using some kind of aid for years. I remember him  carrying a folding stool round the course when I worked at the Classic and a few years back he drove all the way round the course in his Rangie at a Westfield Fitasc. Whilst I realise Westfield has about 300 -400 yards of uphill...

Yes I thought I'd mosey out for a pop today as Gunsite on Sunday looks likely to be rammed. Glad I went as I haven't seen Will for quite a while and also the 12 stand format is miles better than old 10 x 10. As for the targets, stand one was problematic for me as 3 of my 4 loopers went behind...

    Beretta SL2 release

Nothing new there. It was their non existent quality control back around 2010 - 2016 and the dismal performance by GMK that turned me permanently off from Beretta. In a nutshell, my opinion of the SL 2 is that it answers a question no one asked.
