    Barrel Weights

I am only recently - and belatedly - converted to heavier guns. For many a year I've been game or pigeon shooting, and like thousands of my generation I have been perfectly happy with the "round about six and a half pounds" standard to which the English gun trade adhered. Rapid handling was the...

    Barrel Weights

Westley, you state: "the balance of a gun is more critical than some people give account to" And you have rejected the Blasers. Did you attempt to use the balancing system that is a major selling point of these guns? I ask because the movement of the internal threaded stock weights in my F3...

    Blaser F3

+1 Mr Hewland. You may find it helps to put a tiny dab of silicone on the thread; if the screw(s) comes loose it can make removal of the stock bolt awkward. Still love mine after a year. I'm seeing more and more of these out and about

    What are you drinking?

ips you must try harder with the sloe gin, beg if you have to. It is very much the snifter of choice for the outdoor person. I shall raise a small glass of the stuff on your behalf tomorrow.

    Are expensive guns worth it?

Salop Sniper, thank you for the clarification. How odd! A bit like the sensation some describe when firing a semi auto? I'll be out tomorrow ( weather permitting) and I'll take note. I will have your wonderfully described image in mind, and and I will report back.

    Are expensive guns worth it?

I don't think you can dismiss a Blaser f3 because "it didn't fit me", it simply means that particular stock was wrong for you. The shop really should have checked this out. The fact the thing didn't fit you could well have affected the perceived recoil, too. Mine fits, doesn't sport Mullers, and...

    The invisible ones

Thank you Ed. I can't set the shoot up any different because clubs tend to get funny when their customers rearrange the layout (especially when others are waiting), and I can't paint them matt black from thirty yards away while they're in flight and pretty much invisible. I can, however - and...

    The invisible ones

Went off to Three Lion yesterday, and as ever had a good morning. In fact I went round again, and discovered that one target on Stand 1 had changed. Not in speed or direction or behaviour, but in appearance. The sun had, of course, moved round, and what was a perfectly obvious black round clay...

Sporting shoots. Where - and how did it go?

Shot Purbeck's ESP on Wednesday, and as usual thoroughly enjoyed it. A good variety of targets - high, low, crossing, fast, slow and a few down in the dip below. Got severely beaten up by distant right to left crossers, which cost me dear, and flummoxed by a target that rose from a few yards in...

Prince Albert shooting from the hip...

I've asked over on PW and got nowhere... A recent episode of "Victoria", the costume drama featuring the life of the young queen, shows Prince Albert at a driven game day. He was depicted shooting from the hip, both standing and kneeling. He was bringing the birds dow, too. Is there anyt...

Sporting shoots. Where - and how did it go?

For me it's a stamina thing. I have only tried FITASC once, and was absolutely cream crackered at the end of it. The duration was entirely down to the format of the day, with a lunch break built in, but it was too much for my decrepit body to cope with. I much prefer a mid-week squadded...

    Guns/alcohol

The legal limit for driving isn't what is under discussion here. It's the mixture of guns and alcohol, which I still reckon is a mistake. To risk being seen in public with a firearm after drinking is a whole extra dimension.

    New Dt11 carbon fibre

The aesthetics of shotguns are after all a matter for individual taste, but anyone who reckons that a Krieghoff is ugly as sin does have a point.

    New Dt11 carbon fibre

In Wonko's defence may I remind everyone just how close we British recently came to having Boris as our Prime Minister. Nothing to do with the matter at hand, and I apologise for that, but it had to be said.

    Poor Browning 725 Bluing Quality

It's a bit surprising a process that's been used successfully for centuries has become a liability for one of the most famous firearms manufacturers in the world. A bit like the currently reported issues with Beretta 692 models which can apparently simply break in two!

    Guns/alcohol

Regardless of the legality or otherwise I would have thought it hugely unwise to have anything to do with firearms after four pints "and a Sunday lunch".

    Which Sporting gun - 2.5k - 3.4k?

You could look at either a Blaser F16, or if you stretch your budget a few percent, a Blaser F3. The F16 is less expensive, giving you money to spend on extras, the F3 has choices when it  comes to comb height, might save fitting costs. Either model the money spent would be going into the...
