    Unbelievable

As a novice, I've watched this debate with interest and a degree of amazement. There does not seem to be much money in this sport, and it's evidently reliant on a lot of goodwill from referees.  No one is infallible and if I was a referee and a competitor was abusive to me they would get short...

    Introduction and gun fit question

My thoughts as a novice as well. Had a gun 30 years ago and was a decent shot at farm clay shoots (at least in my mind). Break of  28 years apart from a few corporate type and birthday shoots (lessons / loaner gun).  Started recently with No 1 offspring (22) and I've had 6 lessons and 10...

    Advice on coach

What the coach does for me:  Check gun fit (done proper in shop, so OK) and eye dominance Go on and on and on about gun mount, stance, etc.  This is good and ingrains habit quickly.  Teaches me about safety.  Teaches me how to observe, plan and shoot different target types.   Gives me a...

    Kent / Canterbury

You can also consider the shooting ground at Deal.  Under an hour from Tentederden and half an hour or so from Canterbury.  Very good pub nearby and a golf course if that is your thing.

    Advice on coach

Wonko, you have to remember I am a beginner.  So things like a routine through the stands that I can practice on my own, is useful.  Just things like operating the clay release system (many traps have multiple options) is a tad confusing if you have never done it before.  Things many people may...

Consultation on proposed new firearms licensing

I understand Adam, but we must consider this: there are endless reports of GP surgeries having 3 week waits to see a doctor, GPs retiring early due to stress, etc.  GPs her to prioritise and they must make a choice between prioritising a certificate for a leisure activity or dealing with sick...

Consultation on proposed new firearms licensing

There has been some media coverage of the politics of this, that I have heard on Radio 4.  Sorry, I cannot provide a link. The gist of it was that it was recognised that sporting gun owners need transparency and fairness as to the cost of medical certificates and the timescale for delivering...

    Advice on coach

Martin.  Thank you.  However, let me explain.  I am a novice.  I wanted to instil good practice at the outset.  So a few lessons is good,  but a lot of that for me is about learning the ground and trap layout at my local club in an effective way.  I don't know anyone there, so it is also a good...

    Introducing myself

Thanks Martin.  I have my own gun now that fits.  No 1 offspring is using the shooting club guns and so they are what they are.  If he gets keen we will get him his license and his own gun, or I will get a second inexpensive gun on my sheet that fits him.

    Advice on coach

Thanks Woody.  Doug above also recommended JBD and I will be giving that a go in September. 4 prepaid lessons already booked at West Kent for August as they have a 30%~ discount deal in August.

    optilabs

We shall see as I have just ordered a pair a few days ago.  Their service is excellent (sent me several trial frames with no bother and no deposit) and the owner is readily available for a chat.  Prices vary quite a lot depending on the quality and prescription required.  I will post up when...

    Advice on coach

Thanks Diver.  My understanding is West Kent from their rule book only allow their own coaches.  I don't mind spending a bit of cash as realise I can spend a lot of money on clays and cartridges, building in bad habits.  Coaches seem (based on limited experience) to seek to turn me into them...

    Advice on coach

Thanks all.  The second coach I have had for the last couple of lessons is very clear about why I miss rather than just where.  There is specific and clear advice about what to correct.  The bizarre thing is that I get nervous. Even though the outcome doesn't matter.  Coach thinks this is OK as...

    Advice on coach

New  forum member and re-starting shooting after a very long break, so back to being a novice.   In order not to build in random bad habits, I have started with lessons.  My first coach, two lessons was very nice - but not very critical - and I had to change as I wanted to shoot on Fridays when...

    Introducing myself

Thanks.  I am basically back to being a novice again and shooting once a week on my own (or with my wife as button presser) and once a week lesson to get my mount consistent and learn the traps.  Right now with around 25 traps and multi positions, this is more than I can remember.  But my...

    Introducing myself

Hello Just joined the forum having browsed for a while.   Started shooting 30 years ago but only did a few farm shots, bit of trap and a few clay lessons. Work and family took over and the gun (some kind of Beretta) was sold (wife of the time was very anti gun) and my licence lapsed.  ...
