I'm not saying you're wrong or doubting your experience. If you try to shoot DTL with a 26" sporter with a massive drop at the heel then you're going to have a dreadful time. All I was trying to say that things have moved on since the early days, and there are guns that can be adapted to a trap...
Raise the adjustable comb up to reduce the drop, 30" barrels, screw in some 1
I'll agree the Mk38 is the GOAT trap gun for the money, which lends itself to sporting. I had one in 32" but it wasn't for me (it's actually for sale on Guntrader if you know anyone interested). Traditional stocks...
Raise the comb to reduce the drop, 30" barrel, beavertale Forend, screw in some 1/2 & 3/4 or 3/4 & full chokes - you have yourself a trap gun set up. I don't see how that puts you at any disadvantage? The only thing missing from what you call a 'decent quality trap gun' is added weight...
I'm currently on the lookout for a multi purpose shotgun. I predominantly shoot DTL and occasionally sporting for fun. I would get a pure trap gun, however, I prefer a lighter gun (not bothered by recoil) and the fixed chokes are restrictive, and I tend to prefer a more open choke (yes you can...
For anyone interested - Russel Mark seems to sum it up pretty well in this video at 1:50 you see the kind of sight picture, and amount of drop you're looking for on a modern trap gun. My new trap gun with a traditional stock is definitely not suited to me as I'm getting more of a sight picture...
@Jan Powell that's it. Since it's a flatter sight picture the end of the barrel sits more in the middle of my visual field which is getting in the way of me casting my eyes out to the bird.
I've recently gotten a new trap gun and have been taking a bit of time to get used to it. My previous gun, which I still have, has an adjustable comb, which I raise at the back to make it a Monte Carlo. I see a good few mm gap between the mid and front bead this way, which allows me to cast my...
Recently had my first round of ABT with not the best results 🙈. I think I hit about half. I'm fairly seasoned at DTL and usually get 23, 24/25 on the reg.
Any tips on making the transition to ABT? I unintuitively found that waiting a bit for the bird to slow down and stop rising so fast...
Looking for a group of 20s - 30s aged guys to tag along with or form a regular meet for DTL around Glasgow - NSC Falkirk or North Ayrshire.
NSC are now open for late sessions on a Thursday night.
North Ayrshire is Saturdays and Sunday, however, has full cover for all weathers.
Cheers,
Tom
I recently picked up a Browning GTI Trap. Solid citori setup and fairly reputable trap gun back in its day I think.
It's a 1989 model with 30" barrels choked 1/2 & full with red and black action. I'm not sure if the red and black is for the trap models or for early models - I've heard...
Very nice of you to offer. Unfortunately, I'm up above the border, so probably wouldn't be able to make it. What has the low gun hold done for your visual hold? Are you looking just above the barrel or further above to where you'll see the clay as a solid object?
@Jan Powell Thanks, it's been working for me but as you say it could lead to a lot of inconsistency. I could do with some guidance as to how to set up my gun and visual holds for the change in technique.
I've recently discovered that I have to convert to one eyed shooting for DTL. With sporting, skeet etc. I can keep both eyes open with success, however, it just does not work for me in DTL. I think I have some degree of centre dominance (as does everyone I believe), and mine kicks in on...
I have always been told when mounting a shotgun to bring the stock right up into your cheek before putting it in the shoulder, as this makes sure that you head will be straight when going down onto the stock, and your eyes level. I see a lot of proper trap shooters where this doesn't apply -...
