I have exactly what you need. But as you say it's a Beretta 491 silver hawk. The only Sxs I found that I could just pick up and use.. I failed to find a nice Brit one when I looked too. Sorry for the entirely useless post. (Which ironically is what I found most Sxs to be..)

Another useless post I'm afraid.

I have a Fabarm Beta Lux, S/S, 28" M/C, Pistol grip and Kickeez pad. Handles just like an O/U (more or less) and have used it to great effect at many clay competitions. It's mostly for game shooting though when I have to be a bit more traditional. I have other S/S's that fit but handle like dogs in comparison.

The only English I can think of to your specification, you would have to sell your house, and probably mine too, to buy.

Have a look at Winchester Model 23's too if you can find one. Getting a bit long in the tooth now.

I've never heard of a good, cheap English gun. Yes I think some of the old Webley and Scott models come up now and again, fairly plain workman like guns, not to be confussed with the current Webley and Scott models of course. Percy Standbury used to use a Webley and Scott as far as I remember, used the same gun for everything,a W&S side by side with single trigger and choked full and super full I think, but that was was back in history now!!!

I realise it was probably a very long shot(excuse the pun).i will probably buy a Beretta 626e if I can find a nice one but at least time is on my side.the most important thing is the single trigger otherwise English gun no problem to find.worth an ask.

Single selective triggers and cheap don't go together very well when it comes to English guns, much better with a double trigger in the lower end prices of English guns.

I am.not looking for a cheap gun as such i am happy to go to around 5k just thought there may have been some home grown products in that range sorry if i never explained myself clearly.although its looking like. A Beretta at the moment which is fine all my others are from this stable.

Boxlocks tend to be much better 'value' than sidelocks.

Look for a decent Webley 700 boxlock and you should be fine.

You could easily spend £5k on a sidelock and  regret it. Under half that budget will get you a very nice boxlock.

Personally I'd buy it from a recognised dealer of game guns and pay the extra for a bit of peace of mind.......

Just to confuse you; my favourite English gun is the H and H Dominion -  a back action gun. These days a decent one would be £4k ++.

SKB 200E might be worth a look Mick..I know it's not English but it gets good reviews from people who own one.
I hope IPS doesn't read this!! it's hard enough him finding out I have an Auto and shoot the occasional round of sporting... Anyway here goes......

I had an SKB 200 S xS 28 inch barrels, it was great and would get another if started game shooting again or fancied ago at some S x S comps. The problem with most English guns, although very pretty only have 2 1/2 inch chambers.

Look at Holts auctions.

I hate double triggers ...could never get used to them. I went for AYA Matador...nice gun

I can second what TInker says : http://holtsauctioneers.com/ always have some lovely guns... I love looking at the site when they have sales coming up.

If you contact them - they will put you on a mailing list for early/regular warning.

Matt

They also source English guns abroad.

I have seen them at majors in Portugal and Spain including Porto last year where they were valuing many good guns.

Thanks to all I will contact holts and get some information on upcoming sales I have never bought a gun at auction but it may be a avenue worth pursuing.

The latest 'Sporting Shooter' magazine also mentions Bonhams auctions as a source of good, reasonably priced English boxlocks. Just remember it is 'buyer beware'.

Bamfords of eccleston usually has a good selection of English SS he kind of specialises in them. Don't just go off the web site list though give him a ring as he sometimes has some stuff not listed.

And remember.....there is English and there is English.....!!

Glad to see the back of some of my earlier English turkeys (even if they did have a 'name' and were 'old')

Just like there is a Purdey and there is a Purdey......don't be fooled by a name.....they have made some rough shooting ones

I know just what you mean I have had some in the past and was glad to get them out of the cabinet.i will more likely go for a Beretta 626 when I come across a nice clean one.should be a few around once the game season is done.
