Shot my first two registered since getting the new Summit Ascent this weekend.

Shot one gun up (usual for me), and one gun down (Alien Feeling).

I think it's time to start again at the beginning, Gun Down.

I shot the same score both ways, so nothing to lose.

They say in the long run it will make you a better shot ?

Why did it take me a whole first year of shooting to click ?

It was the same before I passed my IAM motorcycling. You have to go so slow to ride a confident "system", but as time passes it becomes worth it and everyone you ride with thinks your a demon :)

Lets hope this shooting changes for the better too in the long run.

First point, I wish everybody started shooting sporting with gun down. It's supposed to be simulated game shooting after all.

I think it will make you a more rounded shot, able to cope with more situations which you encounter on a sporting course if you shoot gun down, rather than being a "better" shot overall. There are some very good gun up sporting shooters (allegedly!) Certainly more stylish though and you'll get more thinking time gun down.

Not everybody learns at the same rate, or has the same influences. Be proud that you have come to this from now on.

The analogy with shooting and you IAM riding system is a very good one. Watch any good rider/shooter and they seem to have so much time and are so smooth in their actions. Watch a bad rider/shooter and they will appear flustered and rushed with associated bad results.

Keep up the good work Wez.

I wish I had learnt to shoot gun down.

My first shotgun shooting was Skeet.

So I learnt gun up maintained lead skeet!!

Its a long battle to learn the new techniques.

Nice gun BTW do you like it?

If you are going to shoot Fitasc sporting or game then gun down is essential.

If you are going to just shoot sporting or have fun.....then you use any tools you want....lots mount....some semi mount....some hold just out of the shoulder.....some use a bit of everything depending on the bird.......and it does not make any of them a bad shooter.

Just enjoy shooting your birds the way you shoot them best.

Wez, plus one for Nicolas post. You don't have to sign a pledge and decide 'up or down'. I would stay away from very down for ESP, but its all a matter of degree and differs with target type. Have a play..

The BASIC tip with gun down is not to just put the gun in the shoulder at last moment and ram your face on the gun. This is just a hurried gun-up. It's a far more fluid thing, combining muzzle movement, face and stock movement in one tidy move. I'm sure you tube will oblige..

Common sense at last.

To those that asked, love the new gun, that's why I bought it :)

Gun up/gun down should be seen as a tool. Use the right tool for the job.
Totally agree with Ed here, dependent on the target you sometimes have to shoot both ways - one particular stand I shot at Oakedge yesterday had a going away target right in front of you and  then on report a high right to left driven target 30 yards ahead. I shot the first target gun up then dropped the gun out of shoulder until the next target was in view. Not a difficult stand but a full house :hunter: . I tend to shoot the sporting type DTL targets presented and close fast rabbits with gun up pretty much the rest and my gun will be out of my shoulder. Over the Years I have moved away from maintained lead and fully perfected the "Poke and Hope Method" - Ed I need to book a session with you

It's vital to learn gun up and down for ESP as has been mentioned by a few experienced shooters because certain targets or combinations will best suit one or the other but also important because you can adapt it to your own idiosyncrasies, if for example you have a tendency to over lead long R/L crossers pre mounting can slow you down whilst aiding concentration.

Basic rule of thumb for me, if there is a trap style target (first bird for instance) in a sporting shoot then its gun up and this includes fast quartering targets. Couple of classic examples of these at weston wood last sunday, everything else gun down to fitasc line.

By observation what about the style of calling for the target gun down but mounting the gun before the target appears.

Why are most first targets gun down but most secong targets gun up?

I reckon its a question of time and not rushing to kill the second shot with a hastey re-mount. Even in report pairs, particularly opposing crossers, you wmay need to stop gun after first kill shane direction and get on the second bird pretty pronto, thereby not really enough time to drop the gun unless there is a long enough delay for the second bird to come into sight. :hunter:
