Matt had a thread about these chokes before but its been archived so I can't resurrect it with a further question.

I am utterly confused about the chokes supplied as original with my gun bought new back in July of this year.  The manual is designed to cover a variety of Berettas but it talks about the barrels being Optimabore with Optichokes with no mention of Mobil chokes which is what I think I have as they are flush fitting and abour 2 inches long.

I have seen a comment on here to the effect that Beretta have not been making guns with Mobil chokes since before 2000.

Have I got a gun where someone has swapped out the proper chokes for Mobil chokes?

There are quite a few 686 e Evo owners on here so could you please advise:-

  • what type of chokes came with your gun - Make  Mobile or Optima and whether Flush or Extended?
  • Do you still use them or have you bought some after market chokes like Teague, Briley or Muller?
  • If you have bought others what have you bought and are you pleased with them?
I like the idea of extended chokes for ease of changing but I'm not rushing to do anything yet.

Robert,

I bought a Beretta Silver Pigeon 1 Game this time last year and it came with Mobil chokes.

I believe guns now come with Optima flush or Optima Extended chokes. The new SP1 Sporter has Optima Flush and the 686 Evo and 682 E have Optima extended.

I think this is right, but am happy to be corrected.

Robert if your gun is a standard 686e then it should have Mobil chokes, Beretta have relaunched the same gun calling it a 686e Evo which has optima extended chokes, same as the 682 Gold e. The new latest model 686 Silver Pigeon 1 has flush Optima chokes. If you bought your gun new this year, it is new though just sat on the shelf for a bit of time methinks and is the older model. Your gun was replaced by the 686 Silver Pigeon 1 which came out roughly 20 months ago, now they have updated your gun and relaunched.

Tom Young has chokes by Gemini that should suit your gun and are reasonably priced,if you give him a call he will give good advice.

Robert, the easy way to tell is by looking at the barrels. The EVO has "EVO" printed on the barrels near the muzzle. If it doesn't you will have Mobil chokes. Optima & Mobil chokes are not interchangeable.

Ah that makes some sense.  I had assumed, obviously incorrectly, that the EVO referred to the adjustable cheek piece which mine has as standard.

I will check the barrels tonight.  I am sure that I have looked at them carefully and don't think I have seen EVO anywhere but I might not have looked at the muzzles.

It would be nice if someone eg GMK carried a table of serial number ranges, models and what they are on their website but perhaps that's expecting too much

My 2005 686 White Onyx has Mobil chokes, although I'm told that White Onyx Sporters of this age with a 10mm rib should have optima fitted.

Might send off an email to GMK to enquire about this and try and blag a set of optima barrels to fit my gun.

Goods should always be 'as advertised'

Cheers Westward.

The main Beretta website has a clear warning to check your local country website as models & specifications may differ locally.  In the UK it is GMK so I expect you will get short thrift if you try for some free barrels.
