I need to buy my gun safe now. I know I want one to hold three shotguns. Are they all pretty similar or is there something I should be aware of when shopping? Apart from the regulation compliance, I've got that noted. I'm not short on space. It's going inside what was the airing cupboard before the immersion heater was taken out. The firearms officer okayed that location. I'm sure there's some really basic error I'm going to make when choosing, but I don't know what that might be!

They should all be fine, not sure if they need to bet certified r kite stamped.... Someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly.

I have a new 3 gun unused here dr sale. Cost me £170, yours for £100 collected.

I have a few used cabinets for sale.

I was originally told to get a 3 gun safe, however when I looked at them, they are that narrow I bought a 9 gun safe instead, just check the width before you buy, mines still not that wide in all honesty!

Very wise decision. I started with a 3 gun for a target rifle but could not get anything else in it so buy larger. My latest was from Brattonsound with central locking and an internal top box. Painted it to match the room - very good price new and bought over Internet arrived in days.

The only advice I would give is that you always buy a gun safe for a capacity two guns larger than the number of guns you intend to buy - so if you think three guns is your initial target, then get a five-gun safe.

This has set me in good stead. If you buy one too small, you'll end up either cramming in your guns or having to rip it out as being too small and then having to install a larger one.

J.S. Ramsbottom on eBay, they have just supplied me with a new Brattonsound safe, free delivery and it comes with a 3 year on site warranty. Great service!

This is why I want a three gun safe. One for me, one for visitors, one spare.

Good recommendation, thank you.

Do I need somewhere to store ammo? I'm not intending to have much lying around, if any. The gun club keep cartridges for me. Now I'm starting to wonder if I should get http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Brattonsound-SL5-4-5-Shotgun-Internal-Locking-Top-GUNSAFE-Cabinet-Gun-Safe-/260890508126?pt=UK_SportingGoods_Hunting_ShootingSports_ET&hash=item3cbe493b5e and risk having way more gun safe than I need!

You don't need to lock away shotgun shells like rifle ammunition but the safe you have looked at is more the sort that I would recommend and you have room at the top for any shells that you end up with at home.

I went for a 5 gun Brattonsound cabinet (without top locking ammo safe) straight off the bat. It has proved to be a wise move.

Buffalo river do some lovely safes. Some with a wood look that my firearms officer gets very excited about 'its brilliant that... Just looks like a piece of furniture!'

Agree with above comments, re get a bigger one if possible. I have a supposedly 9 gun safe? It's nice for storing 4. Forget one that keeps ammo. They cost more and hold 100 cartridges. WTF? I have thousands of cartridges, they can't be locked in safes..

Okay. So, I think I'll have one gun therefore I'll get a safe for five and won't bother with the cartridge part. Sorted! Thank you.

Now I have to decide which five gun cabinet to buy. They all look the same...

Mines a Brattonsound SL5+ - holds 4 or 5 guns - and has a lockable box at the top - I use that for important documents or watches etc - useful if you don't have a safe at home.

Bolted into the spare room using some kind of resin anchor and rawlbolts. FAO gave it no more than a few seconds glance and a cursory tug to try and make it move. It didn't.

Just need some Solvite then really? :)

Hah - possibly.

Mine was fitted with some big old drilled holes, and some kind of resin injection inside before putting the bolts in - something to do with bad plaster/bricks - don't ask me, I only own two screwdrivers and a hammer :p
