now forgive me its been done a million times but , I was talking to a top shot , England shooter and great coach   he asked me to name a shooter who has ever won a big competition  with open chokes ?  he went on to say  its all about the shotstring and its effect on breaking clays .    he advocates nothing less than 3/4 choke .      so anyone won big with open chokes ?

ooh.....this should be good, a six page job easy ☺

Soon be Christmas.  :D

As no discipline is mentioned, anyone who wins major comps at Skeet would suffice!!!!

Up until fairly recently it had always wrongly been assumed that tighter chokes throw longer shot strings, this has been well and truly put to bed and the reverse is in fact the case, meaning Cylinder technically throws the longest string so on that score your coach is wrong, not entirely unusual for top shots to falsely hold faith in old wives tales.

What he says regarding tight chokes being pretty much a pre-requisite for big winners is very true though but paradoxically for the exact opposite reason of what he says  B) . Tight chokes keep the shot together, longer thus avoiding gaps in the pattern, g   a   p  s is what shot string essentially leads to so in short, shot string is not even a good thing necessarily and most certainly not at range.

I think this discussion will roll on and on... I have noticed that broadly speaking tighter chokes work better for me on clays using 24g fibre carts.

When I first started out my local shop was extolling the virtues of 20 bore for high bird shooting due to longer shot string with same cartridge load as 12 ... I’m not sure that’s true..

"Then to compound our indecision we learn that AJ 'Smoker' Smith got his nickname from using a tightly choked gun, but actually favoured 1/4 & 1/2 for nearly all his sporting"

From a previous thread

Brian Hebditch nearly always used 1/4 choke , Duncan Lawton never had any choice , and George tells lies. :D to bambozzle the learners and the opposition.

and cylinder once he took the saw to his barrelle for a fast handling starshot gun.

I have heard same thing but remain unvonvinced

I don't believe any realistic appraisal can be made prior to an agreement on shot size - 7½ 's or 8's.  I suspect that POI will factor into it as well.

mmmm clays they were shooting  are not compatible with todays variety of targets  , with the exception of gd   of course .  !      full and full or dose he tell lies ?

Dr. Lecter ,

Perhaps you could find out and let us all know.

The other thing is that not all chokes are created equal, ½ extended through my beretta is the same pattern spread at the same distance with the same cartridge as ¾ through my fixed choke Aya

I’m big fan of half n half in my Blaser,in the fairly short time I’ve been shooting reg and the odd big comp I’ve not seen a clay that I’ve felt half choke wouldn’t kill convincingly.seen loads i can’t kill convincingly tho!!?

My 20 DOES pattern tighter, BUT after all it is a smaller exit hole  !
I have found the tighter the hole it is much better !

In fact i dream of tight exit holes

Top shots must be more talented than I thought if they are hampered using tight chokes.
