Don't automatically reach for a 20g.  While they are lighter and easier to save around, the reduced weight, increases the recoil.  Even 24 gram will be noticed.  So unless it is necessary, avoid.

Ideally, a lightweight(ish) 12g, with appropriate stock length and maybe 28 inch barrels...then use 21 gram carts.  Much easier transition from there on up.

The main thing, above all else...is commit to the gun.  Make sure the stock is shortened appropriately and ideally pitch as well.  Put an ISIS X-Pad on it too.

Shame I'm at the other end of the country.  Got a Beretta Silver Pigeon with 28" barrels and 13.5" stock that I'm intending to get rid of that might suit.

Being a lady of a slight build I have had a few recoil issues starting out. Although my 12 bore Beretta 682L has been heavy enough to reduce some recoil and I have also used 21g Hull CompX which seem to me to be very soft cartridges.

I have now gone to the added expense of a Danuser recoil system and can honestly say I'm really impressed so far, although it is a little more costly if she isn't hooked yet! ?

Seconded on the Hull CompX being a very soft cartridge to use.  I've used the 28g and they are noticeably softer than other cartridges of the same weight.

What part of the world are you in ?  I have several guns lying in the cabinet that are gathering dust due to my health and inability to safely do any Instructing, any of which could be something to get her started, in 28,20 and 12 bore auto. If it is of any help, they could be loaned.

Hatson Escort Youth semi auto is a great starter gun. Lots of people turn their noses up at a semi for a new shooter but they are very adjustable, low recoil, light and you will sell with ease when she wants to move on.

Good news is that young people tend to listen and retain instructions better than older shooters so teach her right and she will soon get the hang of it.

Bad news is you will get to pay for clays and cartridges and get beaten by your own kids!

hi been shooting since i was 15. shot jst about anything to hand .  now i am an old shooter with health problems and cervical spondulosis but dont want to stop clay shooting.. my beloved browning o/u gives a big kick so i decided it was time to go semi auto. got a beretta al391 teknys and the recoil drop is noticeable,t allows me to carry onshooting 100 clays as and when i like.. i would thoroughly reccomend a semi auto with a llighter cartridge untill the young lady gets a bit of confidence. i researched loads of semi auto and found that the hatsan had a lot of problems. not saying the al 391 didnt have any but seemed a good buy.. it cycles everything and isa joy to shoot. and mount.good luck with the young lady

My girlfriends daughter Evie was 14 when she started and is also quite small, I started her with a 12 gauge beretta and hulls brilliant 21gram shells with no problem at all, soon moved onto 24gram pro ones and now after 12 months she shooting 28gram pro one DTL's a very good soft shooting cartridge. I think the main thing is don't shoot to much, we shot just 50 once a week to start with then gradually increased as she got used to it. Gun fit and a good solid mount will also help keep felt recoil to a minimum. Good luck
