Totally agree ips. the only reason i would buy a 4x4 is for the extra boot space and for the dogs.

No room for a dog in mine due to shooting gear!

Tyres are everything but in 21's are quite limited choice, i ended up with Cooper M&S took a while to scrub in on road (and therefore actually stop) aren't too noisy but probably lose 10% MPG vs road tyres. 13mm tread so should last a while, i cant be bothered to change them back to road versions now the ground has dried out, in fact i think fitter would kill me..

Extra boot space is a bit of a fallacy. Too bloody high for the wife to hoik shopping in to and the load space is nowhere near something like a Ford galaxy or c-max. All vehicles are compromises somewhere.

best vehicle for boot space citroen multispace.. Not everyone's cup of tea I know BUT practical and new xtr model well specced for the money.

I have pirelli scorpion atr's on my disco, good on/ off Road balance. 10mm of tread not too noisy on the road and pretty cheap for pirelli's

best off roader I ever owned was a Toyota landcruiser it was the only vehicle to beat land rover at the time. awesome speed with 4 people and a trailer with a ton of bricks and never let me down off road ,but I did have fat grippy tyres

Good reasons that they probably outnumber everything else in Africa. The next challenger is a Nissan Safari. Built like a truck. Tough as hell, agricultural but I've seen some around Botswana with getting on for 1/2 million Km on the clock and not been near a regular service station since there was under 100k on them.

I have an X3 and that got stuck at the beretta worlds last year. Runflats do not help.  Its all about the tyres but you have to ask yourself for the once in a blue moon you might need decent tyres is it worth sacrificing on road handling, grip etc. For me the trace off is not worth it.

Went to Mercedes Benz World last weekend for an AMG track experience but did 30 mins in a GLE (think it was the 450). It had the optional off road pack with adjustable ride height and low range box but standard road tyres. I was really impressed with how well it handled the off road course. Thought it was going to get stuck on a steep hill climb but it kept on going. Did not get a chance to try it in much mud as had all dried up.

Landcruiser is the one to buy , capable of doing over 300k no problem . The Range Rover does have one thing going for it though , it will be the most comfy car you have ever sat in while your waiting for the AA to turn up !There  plagued with electrical problems and expensive to repair

I do keep hearing about the RR reliability. My RR sport is almost three years old and has been faultless. My last one was the older model and did a couple of sillies, but all went away with free system reset.

Yes buying new and getting rid soon after warranty period is the right thing to do with RR.

The right dual purpose tyres will be fine, I ended up keeping the Pirelli's on through the summer because they made zero difference to the noise, wife actually thought they were quieter and I preferred the handling ! The mpg dropped from 33.2 to 32.9 so nothing in it really.

My big car has 50/50 use split (time not distance) so worth the MS tyres.

As for land cruiser, if they still did the V8 for U.K. I would buy one tomorrow, I was given a new one as courtesy car where someone rear ended me, the car wAs great, but the 2.7 diesel was so underpowered it was dangerous (struggled to overtake HGV on A40 once)

Having driven mostly sporty cars for the last "N" years, I fancied a total change so I swapped my sporty little 981 Cayman for an Audi A6 allroad last November.

It's got the air suspension and proper Torsen quattro. In "comfort" mode it's super comfy on the road and in "dynamic" the suspension lowers right down, the steering weights up and it goes pretty well (eg 0 - 60 in 6.2 secs) rides/steers/handles quite well and does around 35 mpg real world. The boot is huge and the car is stylish without being pretentious.

Stick the thing in "allroad" and with a set of all terrain tyres on it, and it's the only "soft roader" to ever make it around the Land Rover test track. 

OK, it's not a true off roader and it's not a sports car. But in the real world, it's all the car I'm ever going to need I'd say.

Every 4x4 I've had I've not been bothered working it hard and bashing it up but it seems like a shame to get the x class dirty! It does look like a beast with the off road tyres and winch though   

...and I wouldn't want to get in that interior with muddy wellies!

My wife is a Site Manager for a Mercedes commercial dealer so looking forward to her getting one as a company car!
