Braved some ridiculous windy conditions this morning to shoot the registered 100 at Churchills. Got there sharpish, booked on as card number one, so rattled round quite quickly with my shooting partner – saw DavidB and CleverSC3 as well on the way round – so we'll get some comparison scores. As ever, stands laid out well to minimise the walk - a few wind affected and a couple sun affected which might change profile during the day. Started off typically with a straight (g/a bird followed by left-right g/a) as a squally shower came through soaking everyone (and our non-waterproof scorecards). Stand 2 was a close range teal followed by a right to left crosser that needed a bit of attention. Stand 3 was a sim-pair of l/r going away birds – tricky but hittable. Stand 4 I can't recall - I must have blanked it from my mind! Stand 5 was our first exposure to the wind – an overhead g/a bird followed by a distant teal/crow – the overhead was hittable, but when the wind got behind it, it was about 150mph! Stand 6 was in the walk-up stand – a g/a right to left followed by a straight incomer – up until this point I was going well. The second half of the round started with stand 7 in the grouse butt – with a flat left/right crosser followed by the high looper off the bank – the same bird that caught me out during the Challenge and the previous registered there – so in 15 attempts at that bird, I have only hit it once (today) – I only managed a three on this stand which dented the confidence a little. To finish up the round there was a stand with a rabbit followed by a left/right crosser which was high on the wind and missable unless taken early, a sim pair of a right/left teal with a dropping incomer l/r which needed some attention as it was very wind affected. Final stand was a quartering g/a right to left bird followed by a left to right high looper – this stand really killed me card, I couldn't find either bird very well and ended up with a poor two.So – I finished on 67 – well above my 51 current CPSA avg – and fairly in line with what I have been shooting recently (especially if I skip the Westfield anomaly). Overall – an enjoyable round, think I gave 4/5 away to the wind. A few breakdowns and some no-birds which were annoying, but given that rain and wind overnight it was understandable – not so much when being the first person on a stand that day, the trap didn't work – they should be tested first thing.Couple of points to note – from next month the Churchill Registered will be £37.50 (up from £30) – although they have committed that £5 of that increase will go back into the prize pot. We had a chat with Rob Fenwick as well who said that they aim to go twice monthly in the summer so the Thursday evening shoot will be on a fortnightly basis.
