Had a bit of a frustrating day yesterday. First round after the first shooter fired was held up for about ten mins because of a delay on the traps. The trap was releasing the target about three seconds after it was called and then there were only three shooters on the round! I did not shoot badly but only managed a 19 and missed a lot of the straight.. ish targets. The theme continued throughout the day never on a full squad. I am one of those shooters who need to be in a perfect setup I find that when things are not 100% from the out set I feel that I never really feel truly confident and find my concentration is not full on. I ended up shooting 19 and 18 at UT and 16 and 18 OT but I never really got to grips with it because of the start to the day and the fact that I never shot on a full squad.

Does anybody else suffer from this problem ? Is there a way to condition yourself to being able to ignore these hiccups and maintain concentration when the traps or the setup is just not 100% ? If there is how do you go about it because I am sure it would help me

Yes.

You run your own timing and not the squad.

You do your same prep and shoot when you are ready. Never use the timing of the squad.

Good advice I will do that! In fact I usually do set my own time for my setup but I found I was hurrying moving from one peg to the next especially from 5 to six it was like a sprint! I am more concerned about my mental attitude to trap problems. I found that yesterday, and times when there have been issues with the traps, I am never fully confident and find I don't settle and concentrate as well as normal.. could it be I am thinking about the trap not working properly while I get ready to see the target? I feel if I had turned up half and hour after I did and started shooting and knew nothing off the trap problem I would have felt much better mentally.

What is the best way to deal with this should I just be treating it like a missed target and you know just concentrate on the next one because even in the best setup trap shoot there will be the occasional problems with a bank of traps for what ever reason which will be sorted and I can't allow this to affect me the way I think it is doing.

You need to tell yourself that the trap issue is the same for everyone and you'll get the shot again and with your perfect preparation sequence you can hit it whenever the clay decides to come out right!

I agree with the advice it's all good, but easier said than done. Yeah you could opt to shoot the same lash up as everyone else.

Or, you could get your money's worth and just only shoot at grounds that do it right.

Sometimes it's probably best to resist the temptation of shooting at a lash up, and do some fitness and dry mount training at home instead.

Jay to be fair most of the time the grounds I go to are spot on but just occasionally there is a glitch and I find it has an effect on my concentration. If I had turned up half an hour later I would have been none the wiser about the traps having been off and been un-affected. On this occasion someone had been messing with the setup and some how put a three second delay on the target release.

Glitch should not affect the concentration if you do it right. Not as easy as it seems...but if you are rock solid with your prep in your own time and identical each time then you have less chance of the wheels coming off. You run your brain...your brain should not run you.

Breakdowns can happen the word over. Take it as extreme mental training. If the bird comes off you shoot it....if it does not then you reset. If you get annoyed then you have allowed your prep to be affected.

But it is not as easy as it seems

That is really the essence.  It is not a race.  You should be in your own little world there.  Like I say all the time - they are your targets, you paid for them.  They will not be scored to anyone else.  You shoot them in your own way in your own time.   It is not a race.

Just ask a successful shooter how much they care about how they shoot affects you.

And that hurrying between stations deserves a good beating.   It is not a race.

 It is not a race.

and JIC you missed it

 It is not a race.

In order to be able to retain the same pre shot routine regardless of squad numbers or outside influence you need a trigger to start the sequence. If you can find a trigger it will not matter if the squad is full or if you get a no bird etc but the trigger must not rely on the previous shooter otherwise your stuffed when your on peg one shooting 1st target as you suddenly won't have a trigger available.
