Our home buildings and contents insurance is up for renewal soon. So thinking about meerkats and tenors, thought I would have a look around for a better deal. I started with Nat West as I have banked with them for decades, so gave them a ring. I own five guns, a couple of DT10s, a K80, and a couple of cheaper berettas. Three of the guns value', was above the threshold for personal possessions and therefore, had to be declared seperately if I wanted them insured. I was quite prepared to pay a small premium, but was astonished to be told that they would not entertain insuring the house or the contents because of the combined value of the guns. Despite explaining about gun safes and our legal obligations as a SGC holder.I then went through the pain of trying to get a quote from some of the online comparison sites. None of them allowed me to satisfactorily declare that I had valuable guns in the house. Most of the sites had a maximum threshold of £1.5k for an individual item, and then wouldn't have a category for sporting goods, and certainly not guns.So wondering what the rest of you guys do for insuring expensive guns? I'm sure a few on here have DT10s, Kreighoffs, Perazzis and the like. From my initial experience, don't assume that they are covered under an existing contents policy unless they are explicitly declared.

Same here - mine is probably not over the limit - but never checked.

My gun is in my old mans place bob, and is insured separately. If your interested I can find out who does it as I know he has no limit to what he can insure individual items for.

That might be interesting Ed, I did find a specialist gun insurer, but think it worked out at £169 a year, just for the Krieghoff. And even that policy had a max of £8k. It is insured and declared on my exisiting policy, this all started because I thought maybe I couild get a better deal. What a can of worms.....

I've noticed the same problem when switching insurers and always a bit reluctant to disclose I have guns so usually refer to them as sporting equipment unless asked to be more specific. Currently have £2k max cover per item which lets face it many an everyday item in the house exceeds. Just another way of being shafted I suppose.

Hi Bob, All my guns are insured by Lloyds TSB but none of them break the the £3k exception limit; however when I switched to them I did ask the question about what the score would be to insure a £12k shotgun and they said it would have to be declared as an item to be specified on the policy but it was only £20ish for cover both in and away from the home. I think there is also a policy through BASC for gun insurance, I'll check the latest magazine and see if I can find the details and will let you have them. Cheers, Jon.

Ahhh Jon - but when you see the light and get your Krieghoff /wp-content/forum-smileys/sf-laugh.gif

You can insure your guns with your contents insurance provider, Ihave a perazzi and have insured it with the nodding dog for the past 4 years, this year I'm changing to the big red telephone and again no problem/wp-content/forum-smileys/sf-laugh.gif
