Hello all, I have a problem with my gun mounting that I can't get to the bottom of, I am a leftie and I thought my gun mounting was ok but here is my problem,

When I mount my gun it is comfortable and feels right however when I close my right eye ( not when shooting), I can see straight down to the bottom inch or so of the rib and the bead, everything looks as it should but when I open both eyes I seem to be looking down the right side of the barrels, I know I have been shooting rifles for a very long time but surely when I have both eyes open I shouldn't be looking down the side of the barrels, is this anything to do with the way I hold my gun?. All genuine advice will be very happily received, thanks Ian.

I think everyone would see the side of the barrels with the other eye if they are focused on the barrel and rib.  If you refocus your eyes outward to where the clay is coming from before your call pull, rather than looking at the end of the barrel you don't have the same issue.

Best to check your eye dominance before you assume that's the problem.

I am a lefty and i sometimes get this, as i swing for the clay. But as i come to the crunch the left eye come on song and i get the correct view.  I used to pre mount, and when it did occur a quick blink would sort it for that shot, Now i shoot with the gun out of my schoulder i dont get the problem,

When you shoot straight away or incomers do you hit them ? (both eyes open)

Yes I do tend to hit the incomers and the ones going straight out.

Then the correct eye is doing the targeting for those targets,

Do you not  the crossers then?

Can you hit the crossers with the Right eye shut?

Do you have any trouble shooting moving targets, if the answer is no more than the next guy then there is no problem. See Bebo's post.

It's a strange one mate, I missed a few crossers on Saturday with both eyes open so I tried shutting my right eye, I hit the next 4, then I missed 2 so I reopened my right eye and hit the next 3 from 4, with both eyes open, I'm just trying to get some consistency,

I will check that out, thank you.

It does sound like you are right eye dominant. Make a concerted effort to look at the clay not the gun. But if you shoot up the right of straight away clays, then you may need to take positive action, such as covering right eye.

As above, go with someone who knows, who is in the room so to speak as you shoot, you may get away with an easy hit bead or a spot on your right lens.Post up your location.

I'll get it right eventually, straight away clays and incomers aren't a problem I seem to hit those easy enough.thanks for the advice.

If you are seeing the side of the gun when your shooting both eye's open I'd suggest your not looking at the target all the time and allowing your focus to come back to the barrels. If I practice my gun mount I and concentrate on different parts of the barrels I can make my eyes jump from one to the other and once I've got the image I don't want it can be hard to get it to switch back.

Have you tried any of the basic eye dominance test such as pointing to an object in the distance and closing each eye to see which eye cause your finger to move? this will give you a good idea of your eye dominance.

I find a very low comb can give this effect also BUT I think David has hit the proverbial on the bonce, look at the target. Job done..

Defiantly the case. If your dominant eye is obscured by the action your brain will adjust and take in the view of the clay from the eye which has a much clearer view.

You're just not looking out at the target. Forget the gun, look at the clay.

Yes mate, when I close my right eye my finger moves to the right but when I close my left eye my finger stays on the target , I have been told that this makes me right eye dominant.

Will do and thanks everyone for all the advice, got a shoot on this Sunday so I will definitely concentrate on the clays and let you know how I get on, thanks again Ian.
