After shooting on Sunday and loosing feeling in my fingers I figure it might be prudent to look at hand warmers.

Does anyone have any real world experience of them? Any to avoid?

I'm tempted by the HotRox electronic one: http://www.thehotrox.co.uk/

These are very good!!!

+1 for the Peacock things.

It's important to realise when starting those ones that the wick doesn't glow red when you ignite it...

We use all kinds of HANDWARMERS!! (It's been 10 deg F here recently { -12 C and we get plenty of -23 c days!!) Most here have quit using the "burning" type and just buy a pack of the "throw away" packets.

You shake them to activate the "warming" Works great on even cold days!

I use the zippo lighter fuel handwarmers.  I love them and will last 12 hrs if you follow the instructions.  They don't get to hot and I generally have one each in my skeet vest pockets.  Not only do they keep your hands toastie but also your cartridges.

I bought a Zippo hand warmer but find it doesn't really get hot enough to help much when out shooting, you can hold it without the need of the supplied jacket but for some reason when back home and placed on the worktop somewhere it gets mental hot !

not sure whats going on there hamster, perhaps a duff one! both of my work fine with the covers on, with the cover off they get too much oxygen and burn quicker and hotter!

Have both a Zippo one and a Boston see link http://www.amazon.co.uk/S-Boston-pocket-hand-warmer-Standard/dp/B0010XE86I/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1452538328&sr=8-2&keywords=Boston+hand+warmer

Boston one takes two AAA batteries for ignition, holding the button down for 30+ secs makes an element glow red which will ignite it rather than having to hold a lighter / flame like with the zippo. (Also the zippo heat indicator blob of heat reactive paint fell off not that you need it, supposed to let you know when it's warm ??)

I find both really good and take a while to get up to temp, but as Hamster mentions with their jackets on (especially in a pocket) they tend to cool off, whether this is because they are not getting enough oxygen ? I remove the jackets if this happens they soon get hotter if on the worktop at home before going out, outside or in a coat pocket.

Without sounding like I am taking the piss, have you tried gloves?  Someone recommended the MacWet ones which are thin and surprisingly warm.  I have used 'hot hands' for fly fishing, seem pretty good and disposable so not upsetting when you lose them..

Take a trip to your local golf shop, I bought some imitation leather palmed and thermal fleece backed Winter golf gloves (sold in pairs) for around £12 and they have been superb, even when wet. I have used them for both clays (single trigger gun) and game (double trigger gun). I have 3 pairs of the Macwet things and they are freezing when they get wet. If it gets really cold I just use my Baikal and set fire to the stock !

Good idea, the Wilson Staff one are the best ones that I have found for actual golf, cheap too but they really stretch so buy smaller size than you would expect..

I also had a zippo but then got a peacock.  It´s much better, warmer, easier to light and runs longer than the zippo.

Peacock for me.

I use the 'Climatec' version of Macwets but could still do with the extra warmth due to fairly rubbish circulation.

Whilst I like the sound of the Peacock or Zippo ones; I am struggling to find comfort in essentially keeping fire in a pocket with cartridges!

I've worked with explosives for the past 33 years and I'm more worried about t**ts in vauxhall novas.

They needn't be kept in direct contact with shells if you use the cloth jackets, many jackets also have twin pockets anyway but in any case they simply won't get hot enough to actually cause any issue and of course you could always slip it into a trouser pocket.

If it's really cold I just use cheap old lined leather gloves but take them off to shoot.
