I had a Zippo one, worked well a couple of times then just stopped working at all never really impressed with it.

I just don't shoot if it's that cold.......the pub always seems a far better idea!

They needn't be kept in direct contact with shells if you use the cloth jackets, many jackets also have twin pockets anyway but in any case they simply won't get hot enough to actually cause any issue and of course you could always slip it into a trouser pocket
Only did that on a game shoot ,once. At lunch one of the 3 Lady guns wanted to know why the picker up behind her kept playing "pocket billiards"  !

Yep, know exactly what you mean,  that often happens in the cold weather.

I have tried a few types and like the Peacocks. I havent owned the Zippo version but have heard that whilst they look the same they do not work anywhere near as well. Even the cheap Korean replica Peacocks on Ebay work fine. Get a medium sized one for each pocket.

A golfer at work swears by hotrox and less mess with electric heaters but on the flipside you have to remember to keep them charged plus the reviews on amazon were rather mixed.

I wear macwets to reduce the windchill effect and thin enough that you can feel the heat from a peacock when your hands are in your pockets (skeet vest for me).

ordered a couple of peacock copies..how much fuel do they use/need?
not a lot. You get a plastic filler cup that sits on top. It has markings on it. I fill half way and thats enough to last me the few hours it takes to shoot a round of sporting. If you go to the top marker it will probably last all day. Just grab a couple of cans of lighter petrol and will last you a fair while.
