Good god, how many times have I heard that one and seen the shooter blatantly miss! My tongue couldn't be bitten anymore today when the scorer (young lad) is getting grief for doing his job correctly we all moan when they get it wrong but lets be fair when they get it correct!

Took part in the CPSA clubman league last year. Witnessed a lot of cheating by grown men. The phrase "I took the paint off that one" is used for ribbing people at our shoot now after watching one bloke say it a couple times.

Had one yesterday on skeet. I thought I hit it but the ref scored a loss. Reloaded and carried on but the other 4 on the squad told the ref it was a hit and he let me have it. I even said to.the ref it's your decision I'm not fussed.

Really well done you for saying something , the fact of the matter is that there are not any new older refs coming into our game and we need to train up youngsters to do this job , but as you say they sometimes are open to being persued to do things that didn't happen , so as I've always said we need sometimes to police the rules from within , I certainly don't mind saying it as it is when out competing and when we have youngsters work for us we tell them to write it as they see it and if there's a problem tell em to come and see me

You know its a funny thing I shoot trap and have never seen that happen... yet I think the reason may be that normally at a comp there will be at least a dozen or more people watching what is going on and therefore difficult to claim something that did not happen. Once saw a video of Alipov claim a no bird that must have been dodgy because he was given the target again and the spectators gave him pelters.  What is the point of trying to get credit for something you never actually did or something that never actually happened? It is the footballing equivalent of diving in the box for a penalty... cheating plain and simple.

If we self-score we never let anyone get away with anything, but you're right about others at the Clubman league.  One chap came out of a stand to be told, 'that was a good 9'.  The group of us standing behind them had seen him miss at least 3 of the targets.

Its a tough one for younger refs. Especially fibre wads on black clays. Should be their decision but with the best will in the world they can be distracted, tired etc so if people watching back you up that should good enough. Talking reg shoots not majors etc.

I was at Four Counties last weekend and hit the pair. The girl trapping said miss kill. I questioned it as was a clear hit not a chip. My shooting partner and Sian H confirmed oair killed and she corrected my score. Luckily she was one actually calling misses so I could question it.

Is it not a good idea for referees to remain silent whilst a competitor is shooting, but call out losses only ?

E.G. 1st pair.       Pair killed Referee stays silent.

2nd pair       One of a pair missed or both missed Referee calls it out immediately.

Then you can question their decision if you think it was called wrong.

Referee does NOT call    "final pair" and destroys your concentration .

Referee         DOES call       " unload please ".

Never quite seen the point of the "unload please" bit, given its a two shot gun and you just heard two bangs. Better safe than sorry I suppose, especially with semi-autos.

But totally agree with calling losses and not calling last pair. At four counties, a great effort was made with refs; all wearing staff shirt and clearly been trained. Unfortunately they wait until the last pair is due and call "last pair, so and so to follow". Well as a shooter you don't want to hear last pair and it's too late to call next shooter. Should be done as you walk in the cage. Fred at Weston / Westfield is as good a ref as I've seen.

Will ,

 Exactly,

I call out the next shooters name and sometimes a couple to follow as Will Hewland comes into the stand after being made aware he was next.

You then prepare yourself and call for targets and shoot them, if you straight the stand you don't hear from me , until totally focussed you reload for your sixth pair , Upon which I say "Unload please you have finished".

That way you are totally in control of your destiny, and I am just watching for safety or gamesmanship.

If you miss , I call it, if you protest I will normally disagree as I am always right , as I keep telling my Wife.

If matey boy says " he hit that Ref. " I glare at matey boy , and  IF there is the tiniest bit of doubt on my part  (rarely) I will give him the targets again.

But of course the competitor is so worked up now and procedes to miss the next pair . " Pair Lost "

Old men bullying kids is just pathetic to get an extra target said person was told by more than me that it was missed clearly

Probably because "unload please" is more polite than "Foxtrot Oscar" !     ;)

I think refs should be trained  and consistent  in what they say ,  at my local the trappers / scorers are young  and many non shooters  they can be swayed / bullied  to alter scores , after all there job is critical  to our outcome  on the day ,    mobile phones are a big distraction to them too .    do they all have good eyesight ?    do they call no bird  when required ?  I know its a tough job  but I for one appreciate them  and always say thank you ,   good or bad score !

If you don't want to hear the last pair call surely no ref is going to complain if you just say so as you step in to the cage? Most of the guys i have come across in the past two years have been really decent lads and lasses.

If the ref reminding you of the last pair puts you off how on earth do you manage with the ruckus going on behind you at places like Southdown or Horne on a busy day. The chatter and fluffy rabbits from other shooters far outweighs a well timed and expected call from a ref!

The last pair call is not big deal.. Ref calling names is, especially when there are 20 waiting and nobody knows when they are up.

Bloke at Weston on Sunday shot 3 pairs then turned around to the ref and asked if it was last pair. Ref said eh? Bloke asks again.  Ref says yes. Wtf? Pointless self distraction. What was he going to do differently with the knowledge that it was his last pair? They will always tell you when you've finished..
