Something in the west somerset gazzette about The MP Liddle Grainger slating police for huge delays in granting and renewing gun licensing. Apparently he is being slated on social media for complaining as he forgot to apply for his own renewal. Apparently he applied 16 weeks before expiry date and he is saying that should have been ample time.

  Anyone else got more on this story? Seems good news that an MP challenges the Police over their complacency with dealing with this issue.

If circumstances remain unchanged on a renewal, then 4 weeks is more then enough time. No need whatsoever for FEO to make a visit, just renew by post. The problem remains though, that in most of the major shooting incidents in this Country the Police were in a position to have taken steps to revoke Certificates and failed to do so (probably worried about Civil Lit.). Now, when Firearms are concerned, an awful lot of posteriors start doing 'half crowns and sixpences' and backs need to be covered !

This is where a Central Firearms Office and area FEO's all Civilians and with a shooting knowledge could succeed. At least they would ALL be singing from the same songsheet  !

He didn't apply 16 weeks in advance.  He completely forgot until he got a letter from the police telling him his certificate had expired.  He then applied and was told it would take sixteen weeks, which meant he misses the pheasant season.  He then tried to throw his weight about to get it hurried through, got short shrift and had a rant about it to the press.

I have little sympathy for a man who has put his wife and two eldest children on his payroll as 'researchers' and at one point claimed annual MP expenses of over £150k (the 6th highest in the country).

I do believe its his party that has made all the cuts in funding to police forces around the country

you can't cut funding and reduce staffing levels and expect the service to either improve or remain the same.  its just ain't gonna happen

I concur with your views entirely.  Avon & Somerset Police recently took 8 weeks to renew my certificate - on time so I had no expiry period.  As a Somerset resident, I'd take anything Liddle Grainger says with a very large pinch of salt.  Support from a more credible MP would be very welcome though.
