Help needed

I want to buy a semi auto for 100%  sporting clays and have looked at the Beretta A400 but really do not like the blue of the A400 Xcel so would the A400 Xplor Action work even with the different rib configuration?

Also, which Benelli is best for sporting clays. In fact given a choice which is best Beretta or Benelli?

Appreciate the help.

anglo Italian arms import Fabarms.

This going to sound strange but is true.

A friend of mine has 12 custom Fabarm semi,s and swears by them. They are very very light. No recoil. Do left hand as well. Downside not worth anything second hand but then what semi is. He has never had a breakdown.

Check gun trader web site.

Anglo Italian do not appear contactable. No web site or e mail and 'phone is a fax  but thanks for the info

Here very few serious clay shooters use semi automatics but the split would be about 10 - 1 in favour of the Beretta, over in the US plenty use semi's and they prefer Beretta too.

Beretta do plenty of standard colour options by the way.

The Benelli 'intended' for sporting clays would be the Supersport.

If you're still undecided take a look at one alongside the A400......I had a Supersport, sold it for an A400 (after reading the hype) had several problems and sold it for another Supersprt.

It's not my 'go to' gun for sporting clays but having tried the alternatives it's the only one I'd use.

I have been looking to buy a beretta a400 excel for a while as I shoot the Benelli every year and it never hurts to have a spare gun for when your main is having some work done, after trying a few Friends a400's I wasn't completely convinced and something has told me not to spend the money on it.

So as luck would have it on Friday I walked into one of my local rfds looking for a birthday present for a friend, long story short I walked out with a beretta a303 in as new condition (and no birthday present) The gun had been one owner from new and if it has fired 1000 shots in its life time I would be surprised. Being from the 80's you would think there would be some cabinet marks etc but there is nothing, for £400 I couldn't say no.

When I purchased the gun it only came with one choke and it being skeet I thought I should find something a bit more suitable for sporting, now as with everyone that buys a new gun I wanted to try it out so I popped to coleys with a friend to give it a go. While there I thought I would see if they had any chokes knocking around to fit it. After have a nose through a few boxes of odd chokes I found a comp n choke that was the right fitting, so another £20 later it was fitted with a new rather unusual choke and I was away.

The gun cycled every cartridge faultlessly including some 24g number 10 skeet shells, so after saving myself £1100 on the price of a new a400 i was rather pleased with my purchase.

Adding to the above, I too have a 303 along with a 391. I use the 303 every time,  since being forced to use an auto. It is far easier to clean than any of the later guns and although I try to use just Hull Superfast, it has never let me down. I use only a Briley extended I/C choke (I found the Teague choke shot loose and had to keep tightening it) and have never felt 'underchoked'. Shop around for a 'minter' 303, they are out there and save a few bob into the bargain.

Admittedly I only bought the comp n choke for the looks, it is light full or 0.30 so massively over choked for most things but it does give some hellish breaks if you put the lead in the right place ?

Be careful with the other types of A400 like the xplor action although they are the same in theory ,they do not handle as well as the Xcel. Mrs jasper has an Xcel and loves it . there is a thread in the guns section about her journey to the purchase.

My only problem is that I really do not like the blue of the A400 Xcel and the dealer suggested that maybe GMK can re configure the A400 Xplor Action in to a Sporter. That then led to the other alternatives Benelli and Fabarms. I shot the A400 Xcel on Saturday and liked it but why on earth  blue it's a shotgun!

Oh well,thanks for the assist

Have to say the Fabarms XLR5 Velocity looks good may just investigate further. Hear what you say about used price. Checked Guntrader saw what looked like a good one.

If you are near Ian Coleys , andoversford, Gloucester they have an open day on 23rd April . unlike other open days this is a genuine chance to try lots of guns back to back. It's what we did when we decided on the Xcel. The fabarm is an excellent gun and to be honest Mrs jasper would have chosen that over the Beretta , but it was just too heavy for her at 9lb plus. The chance to shoot all the guns you speak of on the same day at the same targets really highlights which gun suits you best.

Major manufacturers have their own stands there also so you can talk directly with gmk about your "custom"A400. Good luck with that.

The Fabarm is a brilliantly well made gun. Its fairly heavy for a semi and the rib takes getting used to, i would definitely try before you by. I had one for a while but couldn't get on with it and sold it part ex for another gun without loosing too much money.
