Why oh why are all the little local shoots such a secret ?

Are they all acting illegally  ?

Surely the more people there, the more money to be made !

5 times recently I have been amongst people talking about a small local shoot, who simply refuse to pass on the details !

I thought we were all in this together.

Oh well  :wild:

There is a shoot near me that you have to be invited? Very secretive

That's strange. Move to Kent plenty of small clubs in the county and all will welcome any shooters, members or not.

I wouldn't worry about it....those aren't the kinda shoots you wanna be attending anyway. When I first started I was invited to a small local shoot. It was 10-15 guys, one trap,8 singles, move the trap,8 singles, move the trap,8 singles.....see you all in 2 weeks?

Second time I went I shot 24/24 apparently that hadn't been done for years and I got a round of applause. Move on....not gonna learn anything here!

Perhaps they aren't competitions but social events. Asking: "Is this a public event?" usually makes it clear what kind of event it is. If anyone is doing a competition or a fund raiser they are usually desperate to get people involved. If it's a group of mates going to someone's land for a bit of a shoot it's more like getting together at someone's house. If it's a game syndicate then they can be very closed indeed, mostly because the shooting is poor enough without sharing :spiteful:  . Offering to beat is more likely a good social way in.

If it's a private social event people are rude to be discussing it in front of you.

There are a few small local shoots very close to where I live, but attendance is by invitation only.

I regularly get told by people supposedly in the know that these are very well organised shoots that have been operating for many years, I was told one is in it's 63rd year.

It would be nice if these shoots opened themselves to other people even if just once or twice a year.

Sounds very rural. Makes me feel that they have their own private social events to go with it. Naked barn dance, pig-chasing, witch burning etc. After 63 years there are likely to be some children with 12 toes emerging.. Mind you, two trigger fingers could be handy on an old side by side..

It takes all sort's. Some people prefer to be big fish in a small pond

OK chaps, please let me know if you ever hear of any secret OT layouts in West Dorset!!!!!

Sounds like you've visited Shropshire then Will?

Are you sure you don't come from Bedfordshire?

Actually witnessed my first shin kicking competition in my local pubs car park last month. Pig chasing doesn't start until September.

I go to a small club once a month that puts on a 50 bird sporting shoot off six stands. All the traps are electric and fired by wireless buttons. All stands use a cage. There are all types of target available including a cherry picker tower.

The amount of land available is limited and the shoot is only viable because the owner has permission to let shot fall on neighbouring land.

The shoot uses a handicap system instead of classes to determine winners.

The shoot is by invitation only to keep the numbers and the insurance premium down to manageable levels.

Come to Lincolnshire and enjoy cabbage hurling, welly wanging and egg throwing whose World Championships are next month as well as Grimsthorpe, one of the best Sporting and Fitasc grounds in the country.

Vic.

Aye, many of these small clubs may be time limited, they may have enough "members" shooting. If they welcomed all there would be a good chance not all the guns would be able to complete their round in the time allowed for the club to shoot. There is a limit how many can shoot between, say 10am to 1 pm.

Not everyone can afford to shoot at gun clubs/grounds which is why so many little summer clubs are out there in the week.

I go to one most wednesdays and get 100 first class FITASC targets and get a pint and full supper for just £25. :nyam:
