Do many of you guys use multi choke trap guns, if so do you change the chokes when changing say from OT to DTL, or do you just stick with a certain choke? I have to admit that I see more fixed choke trap guns around than I do multi choke trap guns, even though multi choke trap guns have been around for a good while now!

Les as quoted earlier never changed the chokes never even thought about it 3/4 and full every time... now should I be changing?

If you are shooting 24gm loads you may want to pattern some more open chokes for the 1st barrel.  In my guns the 24gm 'ers pattern like a hammer.  Currently I have #5 (+/-0.020") chokes in the 1st barrels that use tubes.  The #5 pattern is about the size of a dinner plate at 35yds - honest.  I was using #3's and the patterns are not much different than the #5 to tell the truth - I just chanced on a good buy on a few new #5's and figured that I should use them hahaha.  On the trap layout I can't tell the difference between the #5 and fixed full choke target breaks - centered target is smoke.  The #5 pattern is so tight that it is not uncommon for me to see half a target smoked, usually the back half of course hahaha

Anyway - you might want to pattern the things before you make the big decisions.

just a thot

My Krieghoff trap gun is multi choked, as are almost all K80's. I only shoot DTL (and a little skeet) so have no real need to change chokes. That said, the flexibility is useful. I wouldn't want to shoot DTL with 3/4 and full, that's unnecessarily tight.

Not going to argue against your preferences but I have seen very few fixed choke trap guns with anything other than 3/4 and full, I think even Perazzi are 7/10 and full although I think they will do anything you want. And to back up you choice of more open chokes I read an article by international trap shooter who says that it is more often than not the truth that people who shot trap use overly tight chokings.

I shoot DTL with 3/4 and full and i have to admit they are a bit tight.i put it on the pattern plate at weekend with F blacks 28g 7.5 and all it was was a tight mass no spread at all got me thinking now .what are you using 274368

I will admit to using 3/4 and full for OT, I've shot mainly OT for many years and not much else. Back in my dtl days I had a 682x multi and I tried 1/4 and half and it made no difference to my scores at all. But I felt a bit uncomfortable with such open chokes so I tried 1/2 and 3/4, still no difference in scores!!! So from then on I have used 3/4 and full! Is that mad? Yes possibly it is, but I know that come hell or high water,if I'm on it I will hit it without a doubt! Such choking leaves little room for error of course, but one never needs to worry that a miss could be down to a too open choke!!!

I have a multi choke citori which I use for DT and OT. I use a muller U2 in the bottom barrel for both on redo from 40 UP.
Breaks are good, but more variation comes from cartridge choice.
Think you are right Les multi chokes are a bit pointless in trap.

I use 5/8 and 3/4 although many others use 1/2 and 5/8 or 1/2 and 3/4. It 's true to say most fixed choke trap guns are choked tightly. That's fine for the faster disciplines but not DTL. If you're shooting where you should then a more open choke is ideal.

I can't see that you have said what you use other than that you find that 3/4 and full is unnecessarily tight

I think the U2 is about a half, second barrel is fixed full. I think if I had the choice I would go with something Like your 5/8 and 3/4 as the ideal.

like you I have dabbled in the satanic multi choke having had two multi trap guns. Like you I never felt comfortable with anything other than 3/4 full but I suppose old habits die hard. DTL scores never improved with more open chokes, apart from that I just don't like multi's I don't like them and I don't need them. I prefer to shoot 3/4 full at all trap and play with cartridges if I want more open, such as 8s for DTL . If you want tight then F black trap as someone said previous very dense centre and no fliers so big big impressive kills but miss em and that's it and very unforgiving for DTL.

My point is that cartridges rather than chokes make a big difference.

As usual Ian we are in agreement mate! I guess we are pretty much old school!!!

Indeed we are les.

Trap is 3/4 and full as far as i am concerned. Open choke didnt give me any extra targets just poorer quality kills.
