so the question is when you’ve all purchased a new gun which I’m sure you all have is there a procedure you all go through before shooting your first shell 

ie clean it,oil up moving parts etc

You mean other than play with it in the house and pretend you're shooting err practising?

Check the chokes are tight, check the stock bolt is tight.

Drive to a ground - fill your pockets full of shells, tell yourself that 'newgunitis' only happens to other people - and get shooting - enjoy the experience.

do some skeet, it will help you get used to the weight, swing and feel of the gun.

Other than what's already been said, I'd check the barrels and if needed run a crumpled up peice of kitchen towel (paper) down them to make sure there's no surplus of oil or other crud lurking down there.

Apart from finding excuses to open the cabinet and have a look at it just a visual check over really.
