At the moment most of my ot practice is on ABT as the local OT layouts have issues, the ABT I have been using is very fast ie landing past the OT marker by 10/15 metre. So is practicing on a fast layout doing me any good or is it messing up my timing for a slower regulation target.

Ooh what a good question.

I would think it's better than the other way round and I personally don't think it will have a detrimental effect on ypu.

In all honesty when you shoot OT and you shoot it well you tend to auto-regulate how fast you shoot based on how your sub-concious perceives the target. You will naturally shoot a low, fast angle bird at a different speed (although not by much) than you would an "easy" high quartering target because the angle bird will be away from you and travelling far faster than the higher quartering target to meet the distance.

Practising on fast ABT will not have any detrimental effect on your OT shooting as long as you approach the targets in the same manner as you would an OT target.

I seem to recall David Kostelecky telling me (during a coaching session) that he practices using faster than normal OT targets so when he shoots competition the targets are slower and therefore appear easier.

Which 'local' layouts have issues? Wouldn't be garlands by any chance?

Of course if you really want to screw your ot abt up then shoot dtl that from my experience will have a detrimental effect unless your one of your gods chosen ones such as Stafford who was able to shoot anything regardless. Us mere mortals however are best advised to stick to one thing having said that I believe it's possible to mix ot and abt.

Garlands and doveridge have a trap down,so its ABT until if or when one or both get fixed.

I've always been suspect of the rationale for the train harder bit.  Seems like the mind/body thing is just gonna do better at something that it is the most familiar with - regulation targets whatever they are.

Having said that, there is no way to estimate the margin of confidence gained by knowing that you can manage even more difficult situations.  Just like shooting in the wind, rain, poor light, etc.  Having that in the pocket has to a plus.

JMO of course
