Im looking to move away from electronic ear defenders to the moulded in ear variety. I would prefer not to spend huge amounts of money on CENS (despite their capability) because I am moving house. Are the sort with sonic values comparable? Is there a cheaper version of CENS?

I do quite a bit of coaching with the school team I run so being able to hold a conversation and supervise is pretty important.

What have you tried and what would you lovely people recommend?

I can recommend the Emtec Noisebreakers - as can a few others on here who have bought them. I reviewed the fitting process here : http://shootclay.co.uk/2011/10/25/review-emtec-noisebreakers/ - these are passive, not electronic - and I know that Cens and the like will provide even more flexibility - but at a price.

Very comfortable, and more than able to hold a conversation.

I would also recommend these too good bit of kit is the emtecs and they are so easy to fit and you don't even realise you have them in your ears

I've also got the Emtecs and would not use anything else.

When I first started shooting I spent a small fortune on different ear protection and these are by far the best I've used.

Iggy.

That is what I wanted to know, thank you. So you are able to chat away and hear what is going on around you with the sonic valve? Is it like having a normal foam ear plug in or better?

Certainly the CENS will pick up a gnat farting, but the cost is just over the top. Are there cheaper alternatives? I'm assuming due to size the technology costs.

I've never used the CENS type but like you I couldn't justify the cost.

When I use mine I can't honestly say I can hear 'normal' conversation as clearly as I probably could with the more expensive CENS but I personally prefer it as they cut out any unwelcome 'natter' or other background noise you get while you're shooting. I can hear conversations, but I find I have to be quite close or looking at the person talking to pick everything up.

I'm sure the folks who have the CENS type will have a view, but I prefer the Emtec type with the valve, they're effective, cheaper and being moulded very comfortable to wear.
