I've been shooting shotgun for about two years now, shot a lot of rifles before hand. Ive participated in a few pub shoots ect and have been shooting ok, winning 3/4. I was intrigued on how to enter a CPSA shoot to see how I am amongst people far better than I! From there how does the system work,

Thanks Josh.

Get CPSA membership.

You won't win anything in the first 300 targets as you are unclassified so shoot 3 shoots as birds only ( ask to make sure they are registering your scores )  < Flak jacket on >

Once you have shot 300 birds contact the CPSA and get them to issue a temporary classification.

Enter a few more registered shoots and start climbing ladders. :)

This question needs a sticky < Matt> as it has been addressed a few times.

There is a thread or two about getting started in registered shooting.

this from a similar thread

You can just pitch up and shoot most registered shoots. Websites and facebook pages for the grounds will usually give details as to whether it's squadded or needs booking.

Don't worry about 'making a fool of yourself'. I have found the shooting community very welcoming and everyone at a comp usually has their own little challenges anyway.

Register at the desk, get a scorecard and join in.

Stands don't usually have to be shot in order.

Hand your card to the ref when shooters change, don't try to give it to him when he's scoring. Keep an eye on where you are in the queue, it pays to verify its your card under his pencil as you step in to the cage.

Watch if you arrive at a stand and someone is already shooting , both for your own benefit and to avoid calling to see a pair if you've already had the chance. These days you can see a pair from inside the cage.

Be safe, load with the gun over the bar, put your cartridges in the bin, pick them up if you shoot an auto or miss catching them!

Brush up on basic rules, when you get a pair again etc. You don't need to be an expert but at least know the basics. Respect the refs most of them are just blokes or lasses trying to earn a few bob bu sitting in the cold and wet or sunshine!

All pretty simple and sensible.

Comp shooting is great fun. Go for it.

Join CPSA via their website and then get shooting the local registered shoots.

You will see straight away the standard of shooting at registered shoots is nothing like the club shoot circuit!

But don't be put off! Just get stuck in!

Thank you everyone for your responses, particularly Nimbusgb. I think my most local CPSA registered shoots are Kingsley and Doveridge.

Enjoy yourself. Try not to rush. If others are already on a stand you approach then watch where the targets are coming from, where the decent shotsb are killing them and in which order if simo pairs. If you rock up to an empty stand you can see a pair from within the stand and if its a simo pair you can see two pairs. Most refs use common sense and if you just arrived as someone else finished or if there was a delay (trap malfunction or refilling clays) then they will let you see another pair. If in doubt ask - the worst they can say is no.

Assuming you are planning on shooting ESP (English Sporting).
