You won't win anything in the first 300 targets as you are unclassified so shoot 3 shoots as birds only ( ask to make sure they are registering your scores ) < Flak jacket on >
Once you have shot 300 birds contact the CPSA and get them to issue a temporary classification.
Enter a few more registered shoots and start climbing ladders.
This question needs a sticky < Matt> as it has been addressed a few times.
There is a thread or two about getting started in registered shooting.

You can just pitch up and shoot most registered shoots. Websites and facebook pages for the grounds will usually give details as to whether it's squadded or needs booking.
Don't worry about 'making a fool of yourself'. I have found the shooting community very welcoming and everyone at a comp usually has their own little challenges anyway.
Register at the desk, get a scorecard and join in.
Stands don't usually have to be shot in order.
Hand your card to the ref when shooters change, don't try to give it to him when he's scoring. Keep an eye on where you are in the queue, it pays to verify its your card under his pencil as you step in to the cage.
Watch if you arrive at a stand and someone is already shooting , both for your own benefit and to avoid calling to see a pair if you've already had the chance. These days you can see a pair from inside the cage.
Be safe, load with the gun over the bar, put your cartridges in the bin, pick them up if you shoot an auto or miss catching them!
Brush up on basic rules, when you get a pair again etc. You don't need to be an expert but at least know the basics. Respect the refs most of them are just blokes or lasses trying to earn a few bob bu sitting in the cold and wet or sunshine!
All pretty simple and sensible.
Comp shooting is great fun. Go for it.
