In my search for some FITASC coaching and practise grounds, decided to pay a visit to the Roundwood Shooting School run by Brian Hebditch. Shooting is by appointment only, and the ground is only open Mon-Fri. So a call to Brian's wife Jeanette got me booked in for an early 10:00am start. Brian has been there and done it, an Olympic shot, and a number of European and World titles including FITASC.
Situated a few miles west of Basingstoke, close to Popham Airfield, just off the A303. It's about a mile and a half into the Roundwood estate from the main road, a lovely bit of countryside. Bit of a foggy and chilly start to the day, so glad to be welcomed into the small lodge by Brian and Chas on arrival, Log fire, free coffee and biscuits and some comfy sofas, with a quick chat about what I was looking for, then straight out onto the ground.
The ground has over fifty traps and ten towers, so there was no shortage of challenging targets. Brian carries a large bag of remotes for the traps, so after setting up the hoop, we were able to shoot a variety of targets from the wooded area next to the lodge. It's a very pretty area, a glade amongst the trees with at least three towers and plenty of challenging FITASC style targets avaliable. We moved the hoop around a few times, and 125 targets later, I still don't think we had used all the traps available.
I only saw about a third of the area available, as there was a group of shooters being taken around the other Parcours.
A coaching session with Brian costs £70.00 an hour, plus £18.00 per hundred clays. We shot FITASC style all the way through, in the hoop, and shooting a selection of singles and pairs from each position. Some interesting target presentations, with battues, midis, and I'm sure one of them was a mini, either that or it was 70 yards away!
There is no key or card system, so all practise rounds will be accompanied. FITASC practise costs £45.00 a hundred, a bit pricey, but I guess that is understandable, and you may get a bit of advice if you miss a few.
Overall, a great facility if FITASC or challenging Sporting clays is your thing, not to say that Brian wouldn't also welcome complete beginners. I didn't get to shoot the very high tower, so I have good reason to return and have a go at that. I'll definitely be going back again for a practise round, and would be great to get a small group together for an informal Shootclay meet up.
