In my search for some FITASC coaching and practise grounds, decided to pay a visit to the Roundwood Shooting School run by Brian Hebditch. Shooting is by appointment only, and the ground is only open Mon-Fri. So a call to Brian's wife Jeanette got me booked in for an early 10:00am start. Brian has been there and done it, an Olympic shot, and a number of European and World titles including FITASC.

Situated a few miles west of Basingstoke, close to Popham Airfield, just off the A303. It's about a mile and a half into the Roundwood estate from the main road, a lovely bit of countryside. Bit of a foggy and chilly start to the day, so glad to be welcomed into the small lodge by Brian and Chas on arrival, Log fire, free coffee and biscuits and some comfy sofas, with a quick chat about what I was looking for, then straight out onto the ground.

The ground has over fifty traps and ten towers, so there was no shortage of challenging targets. Brian carries a large bag of remotes for the traps, so after setting up the hoop, we were able to shoot a variety of targets from the wooded area next to the lodge. It's a very pretty area, a glade amongst the trees with at least three towers and plenty of challenging FITASC style targets avaliable. We moved the hoop around a few times, and 125 targets later, I still don't think we had used all the traps available.

I only saw about a third of the area available, as there was a group of shooters being taken around the other Parcours.

A coaching session with Brian costs £70.00 an hour, plus £18.00 per hundred clays. We shot FITASC style all the way through, in the hoop, and shooting a selection of singles and pairs from each position. Some interesting target presentations, with battues, midis, and I'm sure one of them was a mini, either that or it was 70 yards away!

There is no key or card system, so all practise rounds will be accompanied. FITASC practise costs £45.00 a hundred, a bit pricey, but I guess that is understandable, and you may get a bit of advice if you miss a few.

Overall, a great facility if FITASC or challenging Sporting clays is your thing, not to say that Brian wouldn't also welcome complete beginners. I didn't get to shoot the very high tower, so I have good reason to return and have a go at that. I'll definitely be going back again for a practise round, and would be great to get a small group together for an informal Shootclay meet up.

Nice One Bob... looks like a lovely ground, and pretty local to me as well... would be lovely to get a meetup for practice organised there.

He taught me how to hit batues back in the early 90's and was a popular 'extreme FITASC' practice ground for a Thursday trip out when the Alton Mafia was still around.

Good stuff Bob. Looks like a lovely ground. Pity he doesn't open weekends for us weekday workers! Just down the road from me too.

Had the pleasure of shooting there the other month to work on driven targets. The tower blew me away when it came into view.

A very nice ground with the capability of putting on any target you desire.

They also do what they call away days. Its a maximum of 18 guns (3 groups of 6). Shooting from 9:30 - 4:00. Each group has one instructor usually Brian Hebditch,Chas Davis and Brian Claridge. The cost for the day is £95 which includes tea/coffee and buffet lunch.

The dates for this year are,

Tuesday 20th March

Tuesday 22nd May

Tuesday 19th June

Monday 16th July

Monday 10th September

All for English Sporting, very enjoyable days,if you decide to go on one of these it is advisable to take a couple of slabs of cartridges as it has been known to shoot 400+ targets. Only down side if the numbers are not right say 16 guns it will be 2 groups of 8 which means less shooting.

The last time i was there end of last year was to do an hours driven practice off the very high water tower, apparently that tower was 20 foot higher at one time until they had some very high winds and blew the top 20 foot down.

Shot the Beretta World at Roundwood about 20yrs ago. what an eye opener that was :)

Remember a standard target off the top of the highest tower, it looked like a pinhead. Spoiled a pleasing card with that zero.

Was that back in the day of Aston Martin sponsoring it???

Didn't Phillip Thorold win it there???

I was just a nipper running around!

Glen.

I think it was 1993 that I was there, shot on a Saturday, Digweed shot a 92 that day, thought he won the final on Sunday. Can't remember Aston Martin though

I am sure there was one there in the old days and Aston Martin were a major sponsor. I am sure some of the more senior members will remember.

Roundwood - Highest Tower in the Country??? Use to be anyway!

Glen.

I must be wrong, it's not listed on George Digweed's list of acheivment's

I remember being told at the time that the tower was 147ft

I think Phillip beat him in a shoot off whilst wearing his yellow work waterproof trouser!!! I may be wrong but funny the things that stick in your head from your nipper days! .

I would be very interested in having a midweek day there if shootclay wants to get a group of us together!

Glen, you were correct 1993 , Phillip Thorrold , 2nd Martin Elworthy , 3rd George Digweed

Right who's up for a midweek day at Roundwood soon?

With Sloppyun and Mixus
