Thought I'd ask here before emailing my fao. In the next couple of days I'm going to be siting my cabinet ready for when I apply for my sgc. I want to put it in my airing cupboard there is noting in the apart from a small radiator and some shelves. The only thing is iv read that the cabinet has to be secured to a external wall and my cupboard is in the middle of the house. The walls are solid brick though will this matter.

Sounds to me like it would be good and solid, but the FEO is the one you have to satisfy. It's worth consulting them on possible locations before you go and drill holes in your walls.

Pretty sure that is fine being bricks. A supporting wall is what they want, just not some chipboard.

Mine is next to an external wall - but not bolted to it... I think they like it in a low traffic area, not too visible and my FEO said he preferred the safe to be against 'two walls' so that it reduces the amount of opportunity to get a crowbar behind it.

As my right honourable friends have mentioned, I'd suggest giving your FEO a call and checking before drilling - they will be very cool about giving you advice and making sure that it is right.

Cheers for the replies guys. it is a supporting wall I know that because my roof joists site on it. Ill email the fao then just to make sure and go from there.

It must provide secure storage, external walls are idea, solid internal walls are also good, your location sounds fine, my new cabinet is free standing and not fixed to floor either, the key is "secure storage"

I wouldn't put it near a radiator, especially a cupboard with a rad in it. Could effect the wood fit if it heats up.

Best place is behind a opening door on a brick wall.

The theory is the door is opened by some one having a quick look in the room and the door hides the safe.

A common question they ask is. Where do you keep spare safe keys? Best answer - in a friends gun safe as you have his as well.

Ask my FEO on the SGC home visit, we agreed the location and he checked it when he popped in to hand me my SGC :)

" So far as is reasonably practicable "

The radiator in question is never on mate as it's only in the cupboard so iv turned it off. I'll have a word with my fao when he comes round. It will be up against two walls and fixed to one of them and the floor.

The stipulation from Lincs FEOs is that it is fixed to a solid wall and 'out of view of casual visitors' so your airing cupboard should be fine.

Alternatively, buy a cabinet so big that when you fill it with all your guns and accessories it is much too heavy to move. (Like mine!! :fie: ) No bolts, no glue!

Win, Win situation. :nyam:

.....remove the skirting board from behind where the safe will be sited. The FAO will give the installation a good tug.

Mines sited in the airing cupboard, middle wall of the house, brick wall.

The FEO actually recommended putting it there...id never thought of it myself.

The Police/FEO are only following guielines too. Don't want to get into the full legal position here, particularly as you've got a cabinet in anycase.

Generally what they are looking for is to see the cabinet is fixed both out of sight and securely to the structure.

The fact is the inner leaf of external walls in most houses built since c1970's are made of some kind of concrete block, often airated ie Thermalite or similar. So, if you are fixing it to an internal structural wall, chances are it's going to be made of the same material as the inner leaf of the external wall also.

Therefore, given you've said it's in a cupboard (ie out of sight) there should be no objection to the proposed fixing site.
