Hi. I had my first skeet lesson yesterday (1st round 19, 2nd round an embarrassing 11). The instructor was excellent standing with my box of cartridges but he said that he doesn't ever wear a skeet vest and uses pouches but they need to be leather to stop the cartridges getting damp. Most of the other people there were wearing vests. Can anyone please advise what they use and what works best? Thanks

depends on you and the pouch, never heard of the leather stops them getting damp bit tho! a half vest can work well but a single pouch can have disadvantages. The vest holds the weight on the shoulder the pouch on your waist/lower back.

Half vest http://www.uttings.co.uk/p111096-browning-hidalgo-half-vest-ammo-pockets-30900768/#.VGElmDSDmSo

Vest http://www.uttings.co.uk/p112088-seeland-tupelo-waistcoat-skeet-vest-black-12-02-031-99/#.VGEmczSDmSo

Not a lot in it cost wise!

Pouch for me always wore my vest again for the first time the other day and took it of after the second stand as it felt so uncomfortable pulling down on my shoulders. I use a leather Kreighoff pouch from Alan Rhone although the George Digweed version is a nice bit of kit.

Guess its just what you get used to. :spiteful:

I prefer my pouch. Wore a vest for a while but always felt constricted.

Never felt like that, even when its got 50+ shells in it.
Like i said its just what your used to oddly enough always wore a vest and never noticed it either but when you wear a pouch for a long time and switch back its far more noticable, its not like i am a whimp or weak its more annoying then heavy.

As a newbie I wore a vest until it got hot then bought a leather pouch and seem to prefer the pouch. I used the vest last week and it was comfortable but for some reason I just like the pouch.

In the summer I wear a polo shirt and pouch and yesterday I wore a light windcheater jacket and pouch and it was very comfortable.

Thankfully I don't suffer from any recoil so the added padding in a vest is not an issue for me.

Bit of both for me.

Just bought a cracking Pilla pouch from English Sporting clays for Dubai as it was too warm for Skeet vests on some days.

a shooting vest with 2 pockets, and usually 2 net pockets, is popular for sporting, for those folk who like a cartridge choice for long distance ,,close shots, rabbits etc,,

usually folk in `c` class or lower,,,,,,

not needed for lazy trap shooters,,for skeet,, and `flushes`,,, :spiteful:

Skeet vest (whilst i can still fit in one).....but i am a traditionalist .....old school....

plus i have not got the body for a pouch....even if i wanted one.

Wonder when they will start enforcing the skeet vest rule

Vest for me too for same reasons as tinker cos I am a traditionalist, but also cos I dont like the look of pouch things they look a bit American ATA to me. Also prob not too good for me dodgy hip and knackered back.

Hit the nail on the head IPS........load on one side of the hip...not good for backs long term.....regret at leisure in 20 years time.

Mind you when pouches first came out many moons ago...they were worn on both sides like saddle bags. I remember Mrs DP of the US of A.

However i cannot get with this returning trend because I would have my own pouch sticking over any belt that would be bigger than any side cartridge pouch anyway.....hence skeet vest helps camouflage my ever growing bulge better.......not a lot............but a bit better.

Oh yes vest can hide many sins Tinker, I know.

First time I saw a pouch thing was prob early 90s and was worn by a very respected DTL shooter (I wont name names) who I think brought it back from one of his ATA trips. Didn't do it for me then and still doesn't BUT would be handy holder for your can of red bull and a packet of cigars :)

What figure do you need to have?  I probably fall in the don't have the right figure category but my pouch takes 25 shells and is not heavy.   I hate being zipped up in anything - goes back to school days rules.  I also found that my mount was dodgier with a skeet vest -for some reason it never sat completely flat probably - odd shape probably.  If I were to get another skeet vest I would go for a man's one as I hate the women's nipped in at the waist ones.  Good job I was not born in the era of corsets is all I'm saying.

Actually it has room for four more on the outside but I do not use that.

I want a woman to look like a woman and have a womanly shape, I have no problem with a slight middle age spread as most men have same thing, its part of getting older who cares.

Just saying

Sorry went off on a tangent but you two started it :)

Yeah....that is what everyone is saying...it is all personal to what you are happy with.As for the injury risk.....speak to you again in 30 years to check

P.s. I wear men's skeet vests because of that same nipped in reason
