Sporting Shoots; where- and how was it? (2018)

cheers mate, I think I’ve grasped that part it’s more the how much space part I’m having issues with, oh and anything from right to left....but I’m sure with plenty of  practice I’ll progress

You hit one of the second birds on Stand 7, I couldn't find that target at all (although found the first one OK).  And hitting any of the crossers on 10 is good for a beginner - I saw a fair few people not hit any of those.

On the right to left targets, are you struggling to see them over the barrel?  Sometimes happens if you shoot with a flat picture along the rib.  Might be worth trying lifting your head slightly off the stock while you call for them and then dropping down onto it as soon as your eyes have picked up the target properly.

People sometimes say it's down to luck finding the lead on those bigger targets, but you'll find that the more you shoot the luckier you seem to get.

I think with right to left I’m just really uncomfortable looking across the barrel, I also think I tend to lift my head because I think I’m going to lose the target.....need to keep my head down and believe in the process.

I’ve watched a fair few YouTube vids on it and have got some bits to try and see if they help, I’m also going to bring it up when I have my next lesson if I’ve not figured it out and gained some consistency. 

As for the longer targets and lead I do agree I think their is an element of luck but also believe that with time and practice you can’t start to judge the speed/distance/lead and bring a bit more skill in to replace the luck. 

Just need to keep going and practice the stuff I’m coming up short in and hopefully with time improve

This really is a sport that rewards quality practice time. Keep at it!

Not a reg but rare day off for me today spent at Owls Lodge.

Had a lesson with RF including the MK38 getting fitted (it was way out) followed by shooting the course with a friend - lunch in between of course. 

Happy to say got the confidence back after a shocking Sunday m and looking ahead to the next reg this weekend.

Oxfordshire today, think due to this wonderful weather few new visitors as entry exceeded expectations, arrived at 1, car park (not big I know) was full. Picked up a brown envelope from last shoot which near covered entry fees for both Sporting & Sportrap, shot latter first, a tidy 21 hitting some I thought I wouldnt get near so , Sporting one had a bit of a wait due to sheer numbers & only two refs, started around 2 just the three if us, a chap N Smith whom one had never met before and Nick Burns a hugely successful builder from Glos, he was on fire having won C at EJC on saturday, one to keep an eye on at our end. We three had ups n downs a plenty, it was though a glorious day to be out on the clay, one hopes it holds for Owls thursday

FITASC at EJC today. Absolutely knackered as it is shot 100 straight through and the concentration is high. Not a great performance on my first two layouts, both 18, but they were probably the hardest ones. Finished on a 24 and a 22, so an 82 was better than I thought it would be. Not easy again. Very enjoyable and a complete summers day!

HG was 92, the only score above 88.

OMG I got a weather shock at Owls Lodge today. Yesterday it was sunny, 17 degrees, no wind, so felt like 22. Today was windy, 11 degrees, rain and cloud, felt like about 6 degrees. I didn’t even bring my warm coat so I will use feeling cold and shocked to explain not straighting any of my first 6 stands. It was a good varied shoot but nothing too hard. Finished on 89 after a better second half, but should have been better. Winter is back.

Owls also, got caught in big heavy shower awaiting at first stand, thankfully wearing waterproofs, said rain stopped before gun out of slip thankfully not to return. Shot 9-12 then 1-8 had a few “oh look at my lovely shiny barrels” moments to drop complete pairs otherwise had a very pleasant afternoon in some stellar company, squad of more As than a college results day was Nick Chipper Portlock 96, Kevin Childs 96, Grant Pendleton 80+ Tim Thornett 80+ and Richard King who dropped just the one on our first stand and his very last target for a shared HG 98

Owls today   quite windy with the odd shower which probably explains why they hadn't put on too many distant clays but I enjoyed it all except for missing my very first bird out on stand 3    which put me out of placing despite an eventual 95. Highlight of the day was a big bear hug with Helen McKenna when she stepped out of the cage on her last stand having smashed a 98.

Lazy day today just one shoot which was Barrow although they offer a pool shoot as well which I did.  Very windy throughout and spitting rain for a bit.  I enjoyed the shoot and was happy with my 84 winning ladies.  Ended up with three envelopes as it goes as I collected previous winnings, result.

Tough shoot at Greenfields today, their first reg after a year or two break. Lots of people who don't often shoot there had turned up which proves the point people like to test themselves against others scores/classes. 

Almost every stand was wind effected and believe me some would have been hard in perfect conditions, as has been their wont of late they had overcooked one or three stands (in my humble opinion) stand 9 featured a L/R quartering flat tower standard followed by a higher climbing L/R quartering Midi, both fast both dancing like a banshee, it could so easily have been tuned to give people a chance by turning them a tad to show some face   dropped 5 there so 85 seemed a decent score and did slot third in AA (no HG prize), some good people only just edged past 80 and a presumably out of form George struggled too.

Barrow today shot 7 stands before the rain. It was windy though hit 89 my best score with the new gun.

Had the choice to head either north or south, Longridge or Orston. Looked at the weather and decided on an early trip up to Orston and mostly missed the heavy rain and strong winds apart from a constant background drizzle. Had the chance at a decent card and start focusing on a number which made me scared to miss. I started missing. Ended on 82 but it should, as ever, have been higher.

Orston struggles to get the entry numbers it seems sometimes. Always has a nice mixture of targets and great facilities. Maybe I've only seen their winter attendance.

think about 140ish today    not bad considering the weather   :cheer:
