I currently shoot with an 11mm - 8mm tapered rib for sporting. Think I would prefer it down to 7 or 6 mm to give me more pointability, especially on crossers? My good shooting friend says it would make no difference. (he's usually right)

Your thoughts and preferences please...........

Your friend is right in principal but some do prefer the visual reference of a narrower rib, my gun is 11-8 too I believe but if I had one made to order I'd go slightly narrower.

I always wanted a tapered rib on a gun exactly because of the effect you described. I have shot a few, and found it to be advantageous over the parallel rib.

Just recently, I've shot a 32" barrelled gun with a parallel rib, but with a central groove down it, which leads the eye beautifully (I normally shoot a 30" with parallel rib with no central groove). The 32" also has a smaller white bead on the end, which is giving me the feeling of a very long, and precisely pointable barrel. I'm finding the perceived lead I give can be cut back dramatically, and I'm tending to shoot in front until I get used to it. This is making longer targets much easier to judge for me, which are something I have struggled with in the past. Provided I can still shoot the close stuff as well as before, and so far it has been no handicap, I'm convinced I will pick up more targets that I wouldn't normally expect to hit.

Good result all round mostly because of the rib and barrel length. Oh! And the change from Beretta to Miroku. If the rib tapered too, it would be just about perfect though!
Sounds like the gun you recently tried was a Browning!

Almost. MK38 Sporter 32" G5. So far I like it as it's added another string to my bow. First new competition gun in 23 years! (Culture shock!!)

Quite honestly I've never found a Browning that fit me. (Except a beautiful D5G about 25 years ago, but I couldn't possibly expect to own one like that!).

Good luck with it, can't really go wrong with Miroku, solid and reliable. I just love 32" barrels went to buy 30" but glad I didn't!

Just to confuse you more the next new thing is the Perazzi High Tec which has a divergent rib that starts at 7 mm and widens to 10 mm at the front of the barrel...

And what pray tell is sposed to be the benefit of this back to front tapered rib I wonder ?

"This innovation allows you to speed up the perception of the target greatly, expanding the field of view"

:prankster:

Obviously I am now going to look down my barrels back to front when I get in tonight

Um interesting. Far be it for me to comment on the Perazzi inovation team but........ I don't get it.

Don't see as it really matters if you are on em, what ever floats your boat! After all the rib should be a blur in any case, sounds like a bit of a ploy to make people upgrade to the latest innovation!

Anyone remember the old Shadow Indy with the massively wide ribs? They were like the view you get coming in to land on an aircraft carrier.

Won't be long before this "trend" returns. Hasn't been done for a while so it will probably be described as new and revolutionary?  :fie:

Yes I do they were huge ribs.

The Perazzi barrels in the safe here are a variety of widths and tapers and heights.  I couldn't begin to tell you which is which when I'm shooting.  Or even just have the gun mounted for that matter.

but then I'm a totally insensitive clot

Worry about something important

just a thot
