Hi All

Not really related to what may become of the shooting ground but thought I'd share my experience of SCSG.

Last August/September the family and I were holidaying close to Weymouth, on a small holiday park, I hadn't bothered to take my gun etc, as didn't want the security hassle.

I knew SCSG was close(ish) by I was hoping to slip out for a morning's shooting thinking their would be sure to hire/loan me a gun. How wrong could I have been, gave the ground a call, said I was in the area on hols had a SG cert and CPSA membership did they hire guns for some sporting practice - flat "NO" was the response.

They said I could ask in the shop opposite, Sportsman Gun Centre I assume, so I called them explained the reasons and asked if it was possible to hire/borrow a gun, again no, I could only "try" a gun if considering purchasing. I asked if I could try it for about 100 shot's ?? again NO, was the answer. As a result, no shooting practice for me and potentially £60 - 70 (or more) saved and not in their till's - thought it was a poor decision on their part but hey!

I always like to try different grounds wherever I can and if away for a couple of weeks I don't always want to take my gun & gear for the occasional day where I may get to use them. This is the first ground I've come across that has refused to loan / hire a gun for practice, some haven't charged for gun hire even a fairly new 686e once down at a Devon ground was loaned foc.  I would certainly go back there again.

So unfortunately I have not experienced the SCSG ground or their targets and doubt I ever will.

Cheers

Seems madness. What do they do with beginners lessons? Must have guns available. EJ Churchill will hire anybody having a practice round a gun for £5 I think- and I'm not sure they bother charging it..

Will, you can book a full lesson, or book a "have a go session",if you don't have a gun they will lend you one, can't remember the costs though. I'm not sure what would happen if you just wanted to borrow a gun and shoot a round with it, however it looks as though it would be a no go judging by the response the original poster had.

To be fair, at EJC the gun loan would be on a caddied round. Perhaps not loaned 'out of sight'..

Welcome to the wonderful Sportsman Gun Centre, NOT!!!! I would rather go without than to shop there!
If the shop had loaned a gun or allowed him to 'try' the gun , what would they have got out of the deal ? Nothing , only a dirty gun to clean.

Well he did say that he was willing to 'hire' a gun so they could have recouped a bit. He would also have needed cartridges so there was a sale there and who knows, he might have even spent money on something else while he was there (holiday feel good factor and all).

Or they could just say no?

You have a point there DT , all i'm saying is , I understand the shop's decision .

Surely SC Ground could  hire out guns in exchange/on security of the deposit of the borrower's shotgun certificate and so make a gun hire charge and a clay shoot charge and the shop could sell some shells.

Not maximising their opportunities by the look of it.
