Tipping the Gamekeeper

An old friend of mine has invited me to a days driven pheasant shooting on his estate in Herefordshire . The host and seven guests will make up the day. It is a splendid shoot and not let out commercially at all. What would be an appropriate "tip" for the Head Gamekeeper?

I have in mind £50.00 enclosed in a "thank you" note-----any thoughts as to the correct amount to tip

It's a personal choice of course, but that is about right for a 100-150 bird day depending on the estate. Of course, if it's a great day or they present a good day in unfavourable conditions that tip could increase.

Do you know what sort of bag number could be expected?

round my way general rule of thumb £20 for a hundred birds, £30 for 150 and £40 for 200 bird day, and so on

What is expected bag ?

I usually go minimum 40 quid for 100 bird, extra 10 per 50 after that. Its ettiquette to give this in a handshake rather than an envelope, place notes in right hand held under thumb and keeper will take it discretely as you shake his hand, he will be well practiced in doing so

Yep £20 per hundred is common minimum for pheasant and more on a challenging day when they pulled it out for you

Tip whatever you think depending on how much you enjoy the day, don’t worry about bag numbers, it has no bearing, or should have no bearing on how much you enjoy yourself. £20 to some people is £10,000 to others, maybe tip what you would appreciate if roles were reversed?
