Apologies in advance for a rank beginners question, but...

I have had three lessons and enjoy the shootin tremendously, however the instructor always releases the clays on my call 'pull'. what happens when I go without an instructor, having obtained the necessary licence , shotgun and experience? do I need to take a friend to release traps? are there automatic systems? I know some clubs have 'caddys' what it the usual arrangement? I hope to shoot midweek when there often arent so many people around.

It depends totally on where you go. Midweek shooting is usually only at the more expensive places that have caddies. These can actually be good value as you will usually get a bit of advice.

Some places have a system where you press the button and there is a delayed release. Where abouts are you and where do you think you will go?

Lots of grounds have a self-buttoning system with delay function. I avoided these for the longest time until I became quick enough to use them. 

Other grounds have caddies, but they can be annoying when they insist you do "60 bird sporting" when what you really want is to spend time working on a couple of hundred clays. Northampton, I'm looking at you  

Finding a clay shooting buddy of a similar ability is possible. I have several people I shoot with occasionally whom I met through here.

Try and meet up with others ..people are always happy to help.Who has been teaching you up to now and what shooting grounds have you used.

I have been to Bisley a couple of times, Im in the woking area. Firearms officer came today and hopefully will have my ticket in two or three weeks. fingers crossed

Some have acoustic release (you shout "pull" it releases) or claymate (the delay function and counter)

On Bisley camp you can do skeet and Down The Line based on shouting "Puuuuuuulllllllllllll"at a microphone at the National Clay Shooting Centre.

Also there is Long Siberia off the Queens Drive at Bisley which has a fantastic sporting ground based on the Claymate system which incorporates a three second delay so you can shoot on your own and still have time to shoulder the gun and get ready for the shot.  Quite expensive at over 30p per clay but worth it if you don't have a mate to go with.  There is now a lodge at the shooting ground so you shouldn't have to go into the camp to register at the Bisley Shooting Ground Club and get your electronic counter and deposit your FAC.  They also sell cartridges!
