When I started out, I bought a cotton Beretta vest - which I then left in the cupboard over the summer and turned to a mesh vest

Luckily not - just poor grammar. I admit this could well have happened since, as I don't remember the last time I took any of my previous vests out of the cupboard.

Seriously wipe sweaty hands on hot days or wiping rain off gun and yourself (more likely)

This. Moisture of any kind, regardless of origin. Too many rainy days here.
