Took a fairly early run to Windursh SG today - just down the road from Westfield, but a very different piece of land. Set on farmland with a railway embankment and cutting running through the middle of pastures it offers some interesting topology for what I think was a good setup.

Weather was changeable, with very gusty winds this morning and the threat of rain at about midday - we booked on in the small cabin, and headed out into the wind! I was shooting with Fuz and Tobi from this parish - but there were plenty of ShootClay faithful there and we saw, Ed Solomons, Adamantine, Jasper, Brengun and Dunbarst while we there.

Target set up was varied and interesting - Steve and the team had set up a number of stands with one scorer and two pegs - but this did not impact on the targets at all with traps set up to test speed and line - with some really testy high birds that were unpredictable in the wind.

I really liked the stand up in the top left of the field - with a high looper over a tree o/r with a driven right to left bird and a lovely sim pair of curling incomers that begged you to shoot two with one cartridge but could easily tempt you to be greedy. There was a challenging on report pair of left to right birds, one standard, one midi - that were really wind affected - no two birds were the same!

Over behind the club house Steve showed how varied that land could be with two stands within yards of each other that couldn't be any different. The first was a quartering left to right bird o/r with a flat right/left crosser - both pink against a background of trees. Then onto a great pair shooting from the top of a railway cutting DOWN at a fast right to left rising bird followed by a left/right looper which I don't think ever rose above your feet. The angle and perspective made this a really tricky stand for me - I guess the trap was 30/40 feet below us - and I certainly didn't do myself any justice on that.

All-in-all another excellent shoot - heavily wind affected but luckily for my squad we got inside for coffee and gossip just before the rain really arrived. I finished on 48 - well below my average  , but I enjoyed the shoot. There were some respectable scores coming in - including a notable 88 (I think) from Dunbarst who was leading A-class and HG overall when we left.

Great day out - and good company!

Agree with everything Matt said. Highlight of the day for me was the post-shoot fluffy rabbits in the clubhouse as my score was horrid. A discarded score if ever there was one. Beats staying at home even with the inclement weather!

Now in the boozer for a few Guinesses

Some really nice targets, but as you say very wind affected, Nowt anyone can do about that except just get on with it  would have been great to see that layout on a nice day, would have been awesome :) all the stands in the field were very hittable to the average shooter, the long crosser followed by midi along the railway line was a good men from boys stand and also the last 2 stands. Yep a discard 49 for me, unfortunately it brings 2 57's back into play for my adjusted average  Hey ho a 70 odd at weston tomorrow will sort that little problem out :D will definitely return with better weather as there is some fantastic ground here and the target possibilities are endless. Good luck to all in the prelim fitasc, gonna need it :p

Agree - that FITASC is going to be awesome... great piece of land.

hi

think me and mrs had worst of it today with wind and rain. had to discard glasses just couldn't see owt thru em. anyhow we still enjoyed the layout .stands 10thru 12 did for me. agree with others cant wait for a nice day there weather wise. think this has the potential to be steves best ground , shame cant do sundays there .

Steve please pass on thanks to all refs today . its not much fun in them sort of conditions.

jasper

Good point Jasper - fairplay to the refs... wasn't warm when it was dry - can only imagine how it was when the rain started - the girl up at the last two stands looked frozen!

Yeah, big clap on the back to them, hopefully they will have thawed for tomorrow

Me and Dr Clint travelled up to Windrush today, the rain lashed down and the trees bowed over, got out the car and thought the pubs calling but after a coffe Clint said lets have shoot, thought good selection of targets, good birds on stand 11 fast & pink, nice to swing the barrells through and get some quality breaks with the Vipers, Clint got the Blazzer working well there, good to see the form back, we shot for a coffee i won and still bought the coffees .  ... £30 to shoot was good value for the money and fair play to the markers for sticking it out, they really do a good job this time of year.... :) :)

well shot chipper 91 best i've seen you shoot for a long time because that was a good sporting layout shame I lost the pictures on the orange incomer and the rabbit 5 light awful and totally balls up the duck with the incoming thing !!! let another 5 go there. lucky for you haha did blow you away out in the back field on the proper targets though  and as for the Blaser getting it near to the finished set up and as you know them GERMAN things need to be tuned in big time....and you are dead right regarding the FOB vipers what a shell out of 1/4 choke

be gentle with e'm at Weston Wood take off the mask and leave black bess at the stables take no prisoners, and pave the way to AAA. :p

Not toooooo disappointed with my 83 but sh*t do happen...
