Took a fairly early run to Windursh SG today - just down the road from Westfield, but a very different piece of land. Set on farmland with a railway embankment and cutting running through the middle of pastures it offers some interesting topology for what I think was a good setup.
Weather was changeable, with very gusty winds this morning and the threat of rain at about midday - we booked on in the small cabin, and headed out into the wind! I was shooting with Fuz and Tobi from this parish - but there were plenty of ShootClay faithful there and we saw, Ed Solomons, Adamantine, Jasper, Brengun and Dunbarst while we there.
Target set up was varied and interesting - Steve and the team had set up a number of stands with one scorer and two pegs - but this did not impact on the targets at all with traps set up to test speed and line - with some really testy high birds that were unpredictable in the wind.
I really liked the stand up in the top left of the field - with a high looper over a tree o/r with a driven right to left bird and a lovely sim pair of curling incomers that begged you to shoot two with one cartridge but could easily tempt you to be greedy. There was a challenging on report pair of left to right birds, one standard, one midi - that were really wind affected - no two birds were the same!
Over behind the club house Steve showed how varied that land could be with two stands within yards of each other that couldn't be any different. The first was a quartering left to right bird o/r with a flat right/left crosser - both pink against a background of trees. Then onto a great pair shooting from the top of a railway cutting DOWN at a fast right to left rising bird followed by a left/right looper which I don't think ever rose above your feet. The angle and perspective made this a really tricky stand for me - I guess the trap was 30/40 feet below us - and I certainly didn't do myself any justice on that.
All-in-all another excellent shoot - heavily wind affected but luckily for my squad we got inside for coffee and gossip just before the rain really arrived. I finished on 48 - well below my average  , but I enjoyed the shoot. There were some respectable scores coming in - including a notable 88 (I think) from Dunbarst who was leading A-class and HG overall when we left.
Great day out - and good company!
