I would have to think it have a bit to do with your attitude.  Do you value it's cosmetics as in do you simply delight in the form and condition or have any notion of perhaps selling it at some time in the future?  Do you depend on it performing in an expected and proper fashion without fail?  Do you realize that performance is directly related to proper care to ensure the functioning of the bits and pieces?   Does it represent any sort of investment that would be inconvenient to replace?  Do you appreciate that a modern gun is a highly evolved and complex mechanism with precisely fitted parts?

And most importantly, does your skull house a dormant organ or a functioning brain?

This is a test.  The gun will be grading you by it cooperating with your demands or not.  Your fellow sportsmen will be grading you on the basis of the sparkling gun that attests to you having a functioning brain and an appreciation of fine things well cared for.  Or not
