A lovely sunny day drew a big entry at Wylye. I turned up at 12.30 and it was still swamped. I saw Tip Top (who did well) and Sleepy Hollow (who was doing very well, until brain-fade on last stand).
It is a rarely visited ground for me, but nothing decent was on close to home - and I needed a change. I have not been shooting much lately and felt really rusty as I headed out. (Conclude that moving up out of A will take more than 100 birds a week..)
Stand 1 was probably the easiest on the whole course, a hanging high dolly and a very basic rabbit. I dropped one of each, which set the tone for my day. I suppose I progressed, by missing two or so on most other stands, which were harder. I convincingly threw a half-decent score away by totally mis-reading a r-l Battue, which needed very little leeed. 4 misses in front.. At the furthest stand from the clubhouse I went kill-kill, kill-kill, aeroplane fly close across in front of me, miss-miss, kill, kill.. Hmmmpphhh!
Two straights I think, finishing on 76, five below my running average.
This was a tough shoot, scores wise. Chris Childerhouse was leading on 94, which was superb. No stand was too tough, but you had to work all the way round and most were finding straights hard to do.
In nature, I found that there were a lot of fast edge on crossers / quartering birds; where a bit more face or time would have been nice. Overall a good firm but fair shoot. I would definitely visit more often if it were nearer.
