Went shooting again (3rd time) yesterday.

Still very poor shot, hit maybe 12 of 50.

Proud of the two with one shot though  ( coming towards me over head)

Maybe I am overthinking and analysing, I dunno.

I do know that apart from the few tiny tips here and there, every place I have been so far, there is a reluctance to help too much. Seems if you want help you have to sign up for professional coaching at said places at XX amount of pounds. That is fair enough, I understand people are in it for the money and need to make a living, however, it would seem to me that if you want me to come back you need to demonstrate to me (via a measure of free coaching) that; a: you can coach b: your coaching makes me better, therefore feeding my desire to improve.

My main issue , what feels wrong is that when I put the gun to my face and try to look at the bead, I go cross eyed (sort of), my brain seems to be arguing with my eyes about whether to look at the target (sky) or the barrels of which there are two ish.. If I shut my left eye there is distinctly one barrel but then I can't see the clay.

When I hit them it always feels like luck, not skill.

You need to look at the clay in the sky NOT your barrels

If you can't see the clay but see a lot of your gun then it would seem that when your face is on the stock it is too low and needs packing up to lift your vision.

Hope that makes sense.

If you could make it to Hodnet for the shoot we are getting together ( meet up thread ) then I am sure Salopian would take a look at you and resolve a few issues you may have.

WezC,

Where in Devon are you? I would be more than happy to help you. Sounds like you have an eye dominance issue that can easily be fixed along with a gunfitting session.

Eye dominance- get it checked asap (for free!)

You are very correct not wanting to throw your hard earned at someone who may not help you improve so have an ask around local grounds. Get some recommendations and ask how and why they felt the person was beneficial. That will give you a better idea before you part with your money.

If its not too much of a trek get yourself up to Wylye Valley and have Rob Eaton cast his eye over you. Yes, he will charge you £s (its his living after all) but he does good work and sorted my teal problem out nicely :) there are at least another couple of guys on here that have had lessons with him and would recommend him :)

At your stage a little good coaching will reap massive rewards and IMO well worth chucking a few quid at :)

I dont disrespect a coach for keeping his information for paying clients, it took him a long time to learn what he knows and I firmly believe we should pay him to share it.

That said you will in time bump into some guys willing to help but beware, often people who claim to know stuff think they are better teachers than they really are and just because you can shoot well doesnt mean you can teach. Equally I had the pleasure of meeting a nice chap yesterday who on leaving the skeet layout offered to button for me. Instead I invited him to shoot a round with me, he was very good and shared some very useful tips for free.

After 3 visits I think its too early to assume you wont find help at a shooting ground but just remember everything you hear wont always be right.

As for the double barrel thing, it could be eye dominance which I thought I also suffered from. Once I fitted an Easy Hit front bead and started focusing soley on the clay it seems to have disappeared.

I am biased but I couldn't agree more. You learn nothing from missing clays and at your current rate if you shoot 1,000 cartridges at somewhere between £150 and £200 a thousand you'll waste enough to have bought a few hours instruction. Go to someone who's been personally recommended by someone you know or meet - someone who has spent their own hard earned cash on that coach.

Ignore doubtless well meaning advice from those who are not qualified to give it.

I have done a little bit of coaching!

You are very welcome to join us at WMSG on the 9th November.

I am a beginner as well and have been wrestling with the decision as to who to go to for coaching to part with my hard earned cash. I have had a personal recommendation from Les in Dorset from this forum who went to Southern Counties in Dorset which is between Yeovil and Dorchester. There is a former world class lady coach there whom he recommends. I would also like someone to shoot with locally. Presently I shoot at Ashcombe when I can as I live near Newton Abbot but can't go on my own. After a 2 week holiday coming up I would be delighted to share some lessons and the travel to and from Southern Counties if this is an option that appeals to you. I have also heard that Bob from Wylie comes highly recommended in Wiltshire so would be happy to go to him as well. 2 of us together pooling resources and memory might do better than one on his own. Let me know if this appeals. Be pleased to meet before you decide to go ahead in case you decide you can't get on with me or you can't wait and want to do something sooner than I can.

Sorry to mention it but I don't think coaches want to give it away free, it's their living after all and I don't think you'll ever persuade a mechanic to fix your car just to prove he can do the job in the hope you'll go back again as a paying customer! If you go round enough grounds there's always people that will give you hints and tips to point you in the right direction, alternatively, ask around for a good coach and listen to recommendations, there are enough people on here that will coach you, Ben Husthwaite, Ed Solomans and Phill Coley to name just a few.

Look at one thing only..........THE TARGET!!!! After all if you were playing tennis you wouldn't look at the racket. ;)

ooh nice analogy Les :)
I was taught that little thing many moons ago mate! Back then it pretty much transformed how I shot and improved my scores no end, BUT ........it took a lot of getting used to though. Oh, but if your gun fit, mount or swing are not spot on, it will be all but useless! :frown:

I dunno if it rates as good as that Ian. In fact when I was first told what to do I did NOT believe a word of it. I simply could not see how it could possibly work. Even now I sometimes wonder how it works, normally when I have a bad day, but on a good day it just sort of happens all by itself, it's almost as though the gun is programed and is doing everything for me and I'm just watching clays break, without me doing a thing to assist, I don't even consciously pull the trigger! :.:
