Just bought a Beretta 31" 694 Sporter with adjustable comb: "only fired 75 cartridges." Immaculate condition, excellent wood, 'glass rod' trigger pulls ... very pleased. Now, how do you get the matt black tape off the barrels, please?

Usually a hair dryer will help to soften glue and tape.
But where and why is this put on the barrels?

Get some oil on that wood as soon as possible. A few coats of boiled linseed oil or something will be fine. Plenty of guides on youtube showing you how to do this.

The matt finish wood is quite open and will swell when it gets wet. There is very little clearance between the top leaver and stock meaning that the leaver will become stuck on the wood and mark it terribly. A few coats of oil should seal up the wood and help prevent swelling.

RFD told me to do this when I bought mine and I ignored it. I now have a slight marring that needs to be taken back and refinished where the top leaver was contacting the wood when I shot in the rain.

It will also be worth giving the gun a good clean, strip out the ejectors etc and re-oil them. The guns come with a finishing oil to prevent corrosion during sale that goes quite dry and can cause issues with the gun being quite tight to break and can sometimes stop the gun from opening after use.

If you use alkanet or 'red' oil first, it will soak in quickly, but will enhance both the grain and the colour of the wood. Apply that daily for the first week, or until you have the right colour of your choice. Then use a reputable stock finishing oil, to perfect the finish.
