    Balance - preferences

Would love to hear your views on what's right for sporting, trap, and (Olympic) skeet respectively. For the latter my guns are set-up with the balance point slighty rearward.

    Shotgun Cabinet Information

Why would it have to remain "securely locked", if the safe is empty - given that you are still waiting for your certificate?

    Choke Grease

I'd venture that is to make them (1) less likely to be damaged and (2) less likely to seize up. The less of an angle, the less material moves if they take a bump of some kind. You are j/k right? Personally loose chokes haven't ever been an issue on any of my (three) Beretta's and I cannot...

Wanted Krieghoff no. 3 Sporting stock

There's three K80 trap stocks on guntrader - prices seem acceptable. Given that they generally just have higher combs, I'd use the change for a belt sander and get to work.

    Choke Grease

If you clean fairly frequently, pretty much any grease will do. It becomes more critical as frequency of removal and cleaning decreases. Personally I go a between a thousand and fifteen hundred cartridges before a full cleaning of the chokes. I use ceramic based caliper grease as it holds up to...

    Pilla -why so dear?

I own Pilla's and for me, going from crappy yellow safety glasses to Pilla's did make a noticeable difference, especially in different light conditions. I was lucky enough to try a few different lenses from a chap who really has a 'collection' and sort out which ones work for me, and they do...

Beretta wood - needs a feed

Depends on where you are starting from. If you are going to replace the top coating, it doesn't hurt - but a little goes a long way. If you use sandpaper that is too course, you'll spend more time on levelling the scratches. Buy wet&dries in various grit sizes: I tend not to go lower than 400...

    Old guns

Nine years since previous post must be a record of some kind :giggle: Nice gun though.

Beretta wood - needs a feed

It's likely that you have a Tru-Oil 'finish' there, that isnt finished to full effect. On the SP's Beretta don't go the extra mile (even mixing in a lot of dye to make the stocks more 'even'). If you like a gloss finish, Tru Oil works really well if you build very thin layers. At first, sand...

Maintained lead or pull away for skeet?

Thanks, hadn't seen this document before and I think its a useful resource. I think I'm usually quick enough to comfortably shoot the pairs, but doing it (more) consistently is my particular challenge. I still find myself adjusting stance, varying between pull away, swing through and maintained...

Maintained lead or pull away for skeet?

Easier said than done indeed... Given that the clays fly about twenty-one ish yards to the stake, shooting the first one before it has travelled 75 % of its flight path is well near top notch. (y)

Maintained lead or pull away for skeet?

Reviving this thread, as an aside from the amusing-but-confusing thread on "gun-fit": It diverted to skeet I made remarks to for me, the lead on station 3 is different than I'd use on station 4, whereas Pete B. stated he could teach any beginner to hit every target on a skeet field in "hours"...

    Introduction and gun fit question

I'm taking this to the skeet-section, as there are various threads-in-threads on vision, maintained lead v. swing-through and the coach-worthiness debate in a topic on gun-fit 😁. See you there... I'll re-iterate that any debate on who's better is best judged on a field. Given that it's not...

    Introduction and gun fit question

I missed a word in my post that you quoted. I should have said: I use a little maintained lead on pairs at stations 3, 4 and 5, but shoot everything else by letting the clay pass the barrel first. Pairs on 1,2,6 and 7 aren't any harder for it. On stations 2 and 6 I tend to miss in front of the...

12 gauge 24g cartridges for clays

Gamebore white gold in 9's or 7's will do well enough for Olympic in steel, wouldn't expect it to do worse as lead.

    Introduction and gun fit question

@bordergun - I did and in fact I thanked you for both your emails a few pages back. You lost me at the point where according to your system I'd be applying the same lead at station 3 (and 5) and 4. Maybe that works for your students, but not for me. So yes, I did try. I appreciate the effort...

    Barrel touch up, burnish stuff.

Wondering whether its application is for the 'blued' barrels, as opposed to the more 'modern' matted barrels. - EDIT- found it, but no "how-to" instructions, no "before and after" pictures to be found. The web states on an ancient forum post that the "matte finish" is actually blueing over...

    Introduction and gun fit question

I shoot (Olympic) skeet almost exclusively (save for the Sporting skeet nationals and a little practice for same) and would not advise a beginner to shoot maintained lead on any skeet target. In my view, to shoot maintained lead you have to know trajectory and speed of the clay, which takes some...

TSK for DT10/11 Question of fit on DT10

Congratulations then, you won't regret it. My advice would be to shoot the DT10 for a good long while before you switch, as changing guns too often won't do you much good. As for the TSK, I personally prefer the Ergosign, but there's enough on that in other threads.

    Introduction and gun fit question

Don't sell yourself short for age: I've been beaten by 'experienced' shooters often enough. As for the emails - very kind and if I can find a copy of your book I'd be happy to read it. Not yet made up my mind on what it can do for me, but I'm not a world champion by any means. Hence the invite...
