From a quick read of VP90 it seems its designed to NOT affect wood, only attaching to metal.

Will this still help?

It seems that by the time my cabinet is insulated, lined, dehumidifier'ed, heat mat'ed and VP90'd, there won't be any room for a gun!

I wouldn't put a heat mat in your cabinet, if the temperature outside of the cabinet is to low the heat will just cause more condensation. You are better off heating the entire loft ( not very economical at this time ). Slap a VP90 patch in the cabinet and leave the gun in a dry slip if you have the room, I have never had a rust or Wood swelling problem in 20 plus years.
