Just to make everyone aware.

A gentleman has recently been refused an application for a SGC.

He went sometime ago for a 'Well Man ' examination by his GP , filling the forms in the Doctor asked , " Do you drink? "

"Yes , I socialise , play for a Darts team and we eat out regularly "

No mention of the amount of alcohol consumed ( although it is a number of units per week).

The Police contacted the GP as part of their checks and the Doctor disclosed that the patient was suffering from high blood pressure and in the Doctors opinion consumed too much alcohol per week . Application refused .

I think that could be very easily contested if the said gentleman wished... unless of course the fact he has high blood pressure is very significant.

In France to have a licence to shoot, which is also a licence to own a shotgun, handgun, rifle ... grenade launcher whatever, you have to undergo an annual health check at your doctor... I have never heard of anybody being refused a right to shoot or own. This of course has nothing at all to do with the old bill its between you , the doctor and the FFBT. In the 6 years I have been in France I have never seen the police in connection with me owning and shooting guns.

As to alcohol consumption being too high. I was shooting at Mont de Marsan last weekend and what a great club it is. A huge full cooked breakfast was supplied free of charge to competitors and partners complete with carafes of red, white and rose wines ... don't know what the plod would think of that happening at UK shoots.

if it was him i would contest that refusal and seek some legal help. The fact that he has high blood pressure is nether here nor there and could be hereditary and nothing to do with lifestyle. The amount of alcohol consumption also has very little to do with moral character or the ability to safely own a shot gun.

I fear there may be more to this than meets the eye. A declaration that someone is drinking too much alcohol based on their being on a darts team is way too subjective.

one assumes when asked by GP how many units he consumes that he gave an honest reply. As we all know anything over 28units per week is considered too much so I GP was pedantic with his reply to feo then he would have no choice but to state it was excessive considering that is what his computer would have told him.

You will have to learn it  does not pay to tell the truth !

it really annoys me that  us shotgun certificate holders  have to be so squeaky clean  and tread on eggshells  to safeguard  our hobby   ,    when half  the population  drink in excess  etc etc       ,   anyway what happened to patient confidentiality  ?    now my bp  is up   I aint happy !

The demon drink has different effect on different people, because you like a drink does not make you a risk to others,I for one like a drink it puts a smile on my face and then puts me to sleep, others become aggressive ( is it the drink or the person at fault )

Don't they say you become the real you once you've had a drink.

On that basis I never trust anyone who gets agressive when drunk even when they are sober.

It annoys me also to some extent. How can anybody link the amount a person drinks to whether or not the are suitable to be given the grant of a SGC ? How can anybody link somebody's BP to whether or not they should be given the grant of a SGC ? How many people drive their car daily and have high blood pressure and drink to excess regularly ? Thousands if not hundreds of thousands ... the thing is that they don't drink to excess and then drive ... people who do and are caught doing so get their licence's removed and a possible custodial sentence imposed on them ... exactly the same criteria should be applied to the grant of a SGC .

when I applied for my re newel I disclosed I had been treated for lung cancer, you woild have thought I had the plague,my doctors refused to answer the police questionnaire and I had to supply my complete medical history . and have several interviews after the licence was granted I had follow up phone calls on my illness to see if it had returned.

first off, sorry to hear that I trust you are well now ??

what has that got to do with gun ownership, what were they basing there requirement for full disclosure on ?

Being faced with what could be a terminal illness, one could end it early. They will even revoke a license for this. The list goes on!!!!
