Just wondering if anyone had any prior experience of the above?

I'm currently shooting an SV10 Prevail and getting along with it very well (by my standards) but I am finding the grip area a bit narrow and as a result I'm tending to grip the gun too hard.

I'm also not very fond of the Xtra Grain finish on the gun, so was thinking of adding a palm swell (if it's feasible) and stripping/refinishing the stock at the same time?

If it is possible can anyone recommend a gunsmith to carry out the work?

Thanks all,

Iggy.

PS Under normal circumstances I'd just swap the gun, but I'm very happy with it apart from the few things.

Hi.

I know Tim Greenwood does this sort of work, of course he is in Kent...so perhaps a more local fitter can help.

All you need to do, us flatten the grip area, add wood then shape to fit. However, I'm not sure how well the xtra grain will re finish.

In which case, a smart paint job and decent clear coat might be the order of the day.

If you went for paint, or perhaps some stuck on grip material, you could do the work yourself with car body filler, shape it up till it is right, then hide it with grippy stuff, or re finish it.

Good idea because it the grip is small and you shoot a lot it will lead to tennis elbow. Trust me!!

True story!!

Thanks for all the replies folks.

I must admit, I don't fancy having a go at it myself - I'd be ok (ish) with the strip and refinish but I know I'd make a pigs ear of the palm swell.

I had no idea that gripping the stock too tightly cold cause tennis elbow however, my mother used to suffer with it and I've no desire to go through that myself.

I've spoken to GMK but as there is only one model in the SV10 series using the new profile I could only swap it for another SV10 stock which wouldn't have a pam swell either - so no benefit in that other than it may be a prettier piece of wood.

This now gives me a bit of a dilemma - do I persevere and try to learn to grip the stock less tightly (I think this may be difficult as I'm doing it subconsciously anyway) OR do I change it for a 682 Gold E which has a palm swell?

Thanks all.

Iggy.

Try building it up with a piece of rubber bike inner tube slid on from the action end and slip some bits of card under until you think its girthy enough then shoot it for a few weeks to see if it actually makes a difference before you potentially mangle a good stock if it doesnt suit :)

Or quick cheap fix........tennis racket grip.it comes on a roll. Use as much as you want and pack out palm to suit. You see loads of shooters using this cheap fix.

Forgot about tennis tape, can get hockey and cricket tape as well in all sorts of finishes and colours, the faux suede ones are very grippy and sweat resistant (or rain in this bloody climate, present weekend excluded) will look a whole lot better than an inner tube too :)

Mr Greenwood is your man - mention my name and he'll charge you extra :p

I think you think too much Iggy ;)

There's a danger that you're cluttering your head up with all this technical cobblers, at the expense of your shooting.

Just look at the clays and forget the gun/chokes/cartridges.

I've got a sneaking suspicion Ed might have told you that already :p

Buy a new gun I'll break your fudging legs! And go to greenwood and youl get a jones adjuster thrown in!! Will discuss at Doveridge lesson young man!!

Heh!

Jones adjusters are like Duct tape it seems, even if it won't actually fix an issue...put some on anyway!

Do have their uses though...but the ISIS one is better.

I suspect you are probably right Chard....I went to KM today with my head full of cr*p and it all went t*ts up.

I know one smith who does excellent stock work but he's based just south of Cirencester. His turn round times aren't super quick either but I can PM his details if you want.

p.s. After shooting a Prevail you wouldn't be happy with a Gold E. ;)
