Ian, I only shoot ESP, I have used both a S/s and my silver pigeon for this, I tried the silver pigeon with and without the bead, it didn't seem to make much difference to my scores as I seem to shoot mostly with maintained lead and unlike a lot of shooters I shoot with I don't pre mount , just up/ mount/ lead when the clays in the air. As for your original question, yes some of the sporting you will shoot straight at it, like a teal or an incoming grouse!!, I shot at lains at Andover on Thursday and the grouse coming at you were just shot point blank around 10 ft from the end of your barrels!

Well just to put the counter argument I do use the bead on nearly all targets. It is my reference point, but of course I do not focus on it. Fast close presentations are the exception when it would make no difference if the bead was there or not.

Beretta perazzi browning have been producing guns for hundreds of years and have always fitted beads. Those that say they don't need them are deluded Imo. Remove them by all means but all you do is use the rib as a sighting aid. Believe it or believe it not this is Imo the reality
Doesnt bother Mr Ling.......

IPS, assuming you look at the clay (and that's a good idea) the moment you apply any visual lead (gap), you are looking away / to the side of the gun at the clay and not looking down the rib, so certainly then not looking at a bead.

Beads are OK for when you are at home, pointing at the clock or a mark on the wall, to see if you are mounted and lining up ok. There is one on my gun but I don't think I've ever noticed it. Until about two years ago, my long sightedness (uncorrected) meant that the muzzle was way out of focus anyway.
What Will says is about where I am with this. I use the bead to ensure my mount is right ie the "picture" looks like it should do. As for when I'm shooting, TBH I'm not aware that I use the bead, but I suspect part of my subconscious may be using the "stored picture" in some way.

My conscious belief is that as I swing the gun I'm aware of where the muzzles are, but I tend to be looking at the clay and just trust that the muzzles are where I think they are.... does that make sense?

fteeshot

interesting, thank you.

ps

I admire the likes of dark side and evo and ed who say they don't need em and remove them. For those that say they don't need em, I chalenge you to stand by your conviction and take em off then report back
Youre on, can we just wait until the weather warms up first though ?

I knew a very very good ot shooter who returned from lonato with day glo paint on the end of his barrel around the bead. On questioning it we were told it was applied by a very very accomplished Italian shooter and coach.

go figure
I think Franchi made a trap gun with a dayglo orange stripe down the middle of the rib. Re the bead, I am always aware of where the bead is relative to the clay, you can do this without focusing on it!

seems to me that unlike trap many esp targets require that you aim at or close to em. ??

therefore I am interested in what my learned friends consider to be the best type / colour of front bead thing ??

or am I totally wrong about the aiming thing ??
I think you will find many esp targets will require you to shoot a bloomin long way off them!!

"without focusing on it"

my point exactly.

"shoot a long way off them"

yes I appreciate that but some you just shoot at them, surely ?

There are not many you can shoot straight at in my experience, there is often a slight angle or dropping which needs to be taken into account. Max
