Yes it could well be part of a sight dependant on size, but usually sights are made of steel and the part shown would be only possibly half of a finished assembly.

Give me some measurements Aspire.
I'm on it...should have some measurements by tomorrow. Cheers.

Wayne,

Thanks, that helps.

Now I would guess that it could well be half of a rifle sight. Possibly the horizontal piece used for measuring windage (hence the graduations? Try to imagine it fitted horizontally onto a rear sight by virtue of the dovetail fixture with a peep sight above your piece. Then by screwing the threaded knob you could move the peep sight side to side to adjust for wind.

It certainly looks like part of a rifle site that moves the aperture up and down for accuracy at certain distances and on the side is the distance markings I would imagine in yards the picture I linked to is pretty similar but the markings are on the butt side so you can adjust with the gun in position.

It is a ventometer. Various types were made, to allow the fine adjustment of rifle sights.

They are collectable items, and a bingle of 'ventometer' then clicking the 'images' tab will show you all manner of them. Peter Dyson has a few for sale.

Here's an illustration of one (not the same as that from Mr Murcott) together with the rifle concerned.

There is a very nicely finished T Murcott gun on sale somewhere; damned if I can remember exactly where that is. The 'Mousetrap' business was supposed to be a bit of negative PR from his competitors, but having handled one I can confirm that not only does it make a steely snappy shuuting noise it also can trap an unwary finger in a most unpleasant manner. Still, you'd only leave your hand there the once, wouldn't you!

Thank you Charles. I know nothing about rifles....but you have expanded my toolbox a little now.

Salop....stop g o o glguess Ing ....!! You sounded like you knew what you were talking about until Charles explained it beautifully.

Tinker thank you once again for your spiteful comments.

Not trying to bingleguess, just trying to be helpful.

Tinker,

I read the posts previous to your minor outburst.

Once we had ascertained the size of the device it all started to fall into place, myself, evoracer and thankfully Charles were all on the same trail. Charles was able to be definitive rather than speculative. In the end we collectively got the correct answer. Which surely is what a forum is all about?

I certainly was not offended by your comment, but I did think it was totally uncalled for.

Which certainly does seem to be a trend on many forums dating back to the spiteful behaviour we have all witnessed in a playground.

So in an attempt to restore some peace could I say "please play nicely".

??? What kind of moron are you Nicola? You have got issues, after reading posts like the ones on this thread and others recently, I'm seriously questioning if someone like you should be allowed to hold a shotgun certificate?!?!

Right back at you...!

WOW!!! Who's the phantom post deleter??? Come on, which mod has gone trigger happy, PM me...

That you getting another batch of ...hmmm... Clever's in then Nic ? :)

Wish I could get some Fiocchi's down here nobody local does them and the cost of transport... forget it. Are the transportation rules different in France to the UK ? Suppliers will not send out more than 700 at a time and they want  €90 for that! Makes them way to expensive for a peasant like me.

Thank you for the replies everyone, very much appreciate your input! What an awesome little gadget for the period!!
