Beretta es100 pintail, emptying the magazine

I just got a Beretta ES100 Pintail.
Can someone tell me the purpose of emptying the magazine in that strange way.
On my other autos, I usually just cycle the piston until the gun is empty.
It also seems like it will be a problem with gloves on.
