as title suggests what are best ones to look for and or to avoid, handling comparable to Beretta preferably, but prob not Beretta as I want dirt cheap. Not because money is an issue I just cant justify more than a few hundred quid at this stage for what could be only a few outings of phessie shooting per year.

Steer clear of the bettinsoli as previously documented. Lincoln might be good bet. Nice looking and hear good things about em. Or how about a Baikal.  :p

Why not just use your usual gun for the last shoot of the season?  I gather that lots of very good clay shooters use the same gun for everything  including game shooting.

good point but I fear my DT10 with fixed trap chokes may leave little of the pheasant to consume.

I can borrow one from any number of friends but I prefer my own stuff.

dilemma

I have seen brand new webley Scott ou game multi for less than 800 quid and that's before I get any discount. Um might be worth a look.

As with clay guns an 800 second hand gun from Beretta for example (as you mention that) would be better than any 800 gun new, in fact I think it's even more the case with game as the handling needs to be quicker, you don't get to 'see a pair'..

Coming up to the end of the season you should be able to get something decent for that money, if a little tired, but refurbishing the woodwork is no hardship.

i have seen some good, but old, Mirokus for that kind of money.

I just shoots clays myself, but know a few game shots round this way.  The ones I've spoken to seem to use fairly tight chokes, as they all take the pee out of me when I say I use 1/4 and 1/2 for all my clay shooting (even the odd bit of DTL).  I would have thought there would be more chance of pricking them with open chokes.

As you know the best cheap gun is a either a Miroku or Beretta 682 for around £750 upwards but if you want to spend next to nothing then my recommendation would be one of these : https://www.guntrader.uk/Guns-For-Sale/Laurona_Shotgun_Sportng_For-Sale_151202123907001

You can pick the odd 28" barrel version for £200 and even less for their Side by sides but I feel it's worth getting a 30" for game. Laurona's don't rust and very rarely break.

valid point that last bit, one would think. But I am not knowledgeable on such matters as game

that's just the job Hamid.

I am in a real pickle now, I want a traditional sxs BUT is it a step to far after thirty years of OU

Funnily enough i was thinking of getting an all round gun and looking asking the game shots that wrre shooting sporting what they were using. From the guns I looked at to me the new  Browning 525 sporter is an impressive package for the price. Handling was good not too low in the stock, steel proof and very  well finished off.

My instinct was to go for a second hand  early 686 or 687 but in that price range they are generally the early ones are  not steel proofed or worn out.

If you only want to spend a few hundred a Lanber is a good option, plenty of them out there and plenty of spares available.

Not sure if I've misunderstood, but what's the problem with Bettinsoli? I guess that as a regular clay gun, ie one that's expected to ping through 1000's of shells every week or two, the Bettinsoli might be less reliable than some of the bigger names (are they though, ie has anyone got any actual, measurable evidence?)

Anyway, as game shooters are only likely to get though a few boxes of shells every decade or two, surely the Bettinsoli would last well enough if cared for?

To be clear, I'm asking questions here.

A couple of years ago at a syndicate I was in . Lots bought the bettinsoli. They  looked good value . Nice to look at etc etc and yes they probably last as well as anything.. but they are only good value if they work. Second barrel would not fire on  all of them. I.E not reliable. This is a well known problem which has been touched upon on here before. Maybe you are worried because your CG is closely related??? :D :D :D Maybe the new ones are better . but as IPs states he only wants to spend a few hundred and new ones are getting stupid money. Wouldn't buy one with your money.

Guy that used to be in the syndicate I shot with bought a second hand AYA sxs 28" choke 1/2 and full I think , think he paid £185 for it. The first day he used it killed everything that flew in front of him. I have to say it was a lovely little thing... when you are used to an over under these guns are like toys I think it weighed about 5lbs tops.

that's exactly what i really want john. Cheapo sxs with soul.

I think the average game shot will go through more than a few boxes in 2 decades.

AyA No.4 boxlock ejector with 28" barrels. A straight lift of the Webley 700 series. Auto safe, 2 triggers, straight hand stock, should get one for around £400.00, weight 6 1/4 lbs. Oh and 2 3/4" chambers too.
