Browning Firing Pins

I suspect my year-old B525 will need a new bottom firing pin before too long as it's started pitting quite severely.

I'm quite happy to do this job myself and in the past I bought parts for my old GTi from Medway UK - is there anywhere else people might suggest for simple parts like firing pins that are similarly- or better-priced?

Year old and needs a new firing pin ? It shouldn't do unless faulty which is done under Warrantee.

I agree with Robert here, get it done under warranty. How much use has it had?

Out of interest, what is the expected life of a firing pin? I have a load of bits for my gun from a Beretta dealer in Italy.

Depends on the make. Miroku pins are seemingly made of play-do and pit quickly. Beretta are indestructible. I change my Perazzi ones every 25000 shells and they are pitting well by then..

Looks like PPM on my 391 is due then, I have new firing pins, rats tail and an upgraded firing pin spring from J&P Custom Works.

It's coming up to 2 years old and has seen probably 30K plus through it on a single pin, makes more sense to my mind the next time it gets stripped to change them than have it fail in competition.

Unless it gets wet it's lucky to be taken apart, relax the fore end cap and back in the cab until it hits 4or5K shells and the gas valve, piston rod and piston need a good clean.

Seriously, it's uber reliable and am far happier shooting it than cleaning it, keep the oil to a minimum but in the right places and they run like a Rolex

30K cartridges through it and failures to cycle I can measure 2 hands full of fingers and a foot of toes, remove failures whilst wet and post recoil spring change (where you are supposed to run 36g for a couple of boxes) and they can be counted on 1 hand!!

Original pins in my Winchester 6500 mk2, now 28 years old they are slightly pitted. Not going to change them until they fail though.

Beretta pins are excellent in general.

It does depend of course on the cartridges used as well. Hard caps and excessive recoil will not help at all.

I have heard of several pins being replaced though in very young 525s over the last few months. Bit of a nasty trend.

Might pay to have some made if you can afford it.

Browning and warranty??? Mmmmm can tell you a story about that!!! Wouldn't bother personally to much hassle for the cost and time is money nowadays! It can't be brand new and only a year old if you need a new firing pins already? That seems really odd unless you have shot mosterous amounts with it?. My Gun has had replacements once since I have had it. God knows how long that is??? It has shot a shed load of cartridges as well and been used and abused?

My browning 425 was pre-used before me so god knows how much work it did. The only reason I replaced mine was due to mis-fires due to the bottom pin not connecting and on closer inspection it was clearly worn.

Since it was changed no issues to date.

Ti is a very overrated material. Trust me, you wouldnt finish a round of skeet with Ti firing pins. Hi grade steel, heat treated properly, or nothing, trust me.

Hammy, serious question: What do the tips of the firing pins look like? Are they very pitted or are they smooth? (Which make of gun, Beretta? They are very good). I change mine when they look pitted but maybe they would carry on a lot longer than I think. My mentality is preventitive maintenance.

Thanks all for the comments - although there's no mileage or service history to go against like you do with a car, I'm fairly confident my 525 is not an old gun. The serial number ends ZZ implying it was built in 2011 from info I can find on the web and I was told it was new when I bought it from the dealer last May so that seems to match up.

I only tend to shoot once a month too so it's probably had circa 1000 shells through it - certainly no more than 1500 - probably split evenly between Kent Velocity and Eley Firsts, if that's likely to make a difference.

I've already spoken with the selling dealer who tells me it's a common thing (I've already seen posts on other forums in relation to newer Browning O/Us so this didn't come as much of a surprise) and that if I returned it to him, all he would do is take the pin out and dress it with something like emery paper. I wasn't too happy with that idea as I can see there are chunks missing out of the tip of the pin that dressing won't put back so I made the decision to change the pins myself when it starts misfiring rather than risk having it dealt with under warranty and lose the use of it over the summer if it has to be sent back to Browning.

No problem Clever (from one mechanical engineer to another) it us all personal choice. I have worked a lot with Titanium. I am relaxed.



P.s who is coming Thursady to RBSS? Are we booking on mass.
