Seriously you have used Ti firing pins succesfully??

I am out of RBSS Thursday now. Phil W is in charge!

Thanks all for the comments - although there's no mileage or service history to go against like you do with a car, I'm fairly confident my 525 is not an old gun. The serial number ends ZZ implying it was built in 2011 from info I can find on the web and I was told it was new when I bought it from the dealer last May so that seems to match up.

I only tend to shoot once a month too so it's probably had circa 1000 shells through it - certainly no more than 1500 - probably split evenly between Kent Velocity and Eley Firsts, if that's likely to make a difference.

I've already spoken with the selling dealer who tells me it's a common thing (I've already seen posts on other forums in relation to newer Browning O/Us so this didn't come as much of a surprise) and that if I returned it to him, all he would do is take the pin out and dress it with something like emery paper. I wasn't too happy with that idea as I can see there are chunks missing out of the tip of the pin that dressing won't put back so I made the decision to change the pins myself when it starts misfiring rather than risk having it dealt with under warranty and lose the use of it over the summer if it has to be sent back to Browning.
Browning is likely same as Miroku. Made of crap material. Probably mild steel. Interesting to see how bad they look before non-fires start. Yes, rubbing with emery is the remark of an idiot, as removing material from something that is already dissapearing is not an option..

I actually have a very expensive piece of equipment that electronically measures material content. If somebody sends me a Beretta firing pin I will know what to make them from!

Hammy, serious question: What do the tips of the firing pins look like? Are they very pitted or are they smooth? (Which make of gun, Beretta? They are very good). I change mine when they look pitted but maybe they would carry on a lot longer than I think. My mentality is preventitive maintenance.

Seriously Clever I never ever look  . I have shot a 682 old spec and a 682e most of all, with a spattering of Laurona, Brownings and Miroku's as well. The latter were always sold before we got too involved :D . There are two faults with the 682's, poor triggers and barrels selectors. The latter can too easily be swiped over from bottom to top barrel unwittingly. I had my old 682 filed down in fact.

ps. I have occasionally seen people fail to fire only to find they've managed to middle the selector switch with Beretta's.

Hammy / Clever - how about some pictures on your profiles? If you cannot upload, feel free to email them to me on [email protected] and I'll set them for you.

Your dealer is right. Miroku/Browning firing pins just get pitted with normal use and bit by bit the pins get shorter until eventually you'll get FTFs probably on the bottom barrel. This could be anywhere from 2k to 52K rounds. They're cheap and fairly easy to replace, but it's no fun shooting a gun that you worry about and if it does worry you change to a Beretta or another maker whose FPs don't suffer from pitting.

How cheap? Wouldnt bother me changing them if they were actually cheap. The Perazzi ones are £100 a pair with p+p!

I keep wanting to do it Matt but too lazy to use my own ancient computer where all the pics are, instead keep nicking son's MacBook Pro  . Meanwhile could you just bingle a picture of Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate and transpose it on one of Al Pacino in Scarface, pretty much there I think.

Oh and don't forget: Say hello to my little friend at the bottom  :.:  .

The pins individually were about £12 the last time I looked on Midway UK's site. Can't say as I saw them sold in pairs though.

Would you say it's worth doing the mainsprings while they're out for me to do the pins? Even on a year-old gun?

This happened to me on the last day of the season hadnt happened before :(

Clever. Apparently the Titanium ones are not supposed to break. I think they are about £60 something each (as I said mine were free from the US). So I will tell you in another x years how good they are :D ^_^

Hi Nic,

I reckon they wont break, but the ends could pit badly. UNLESS they are coated with something hard perhaps. In which case they are likely some lairy colour, or black. If they are in your gun, I will have a look next time I see you..

Browning and warranty??? Mmmmm can tell you a story about that!!! Wouldn't bother personally to much hassle for the cost and time is money nowadays! It can't be brand new and only a year old if you need a new firing pins already? That seems really odd unless you have shot mosterous amounts with it?. My Gun has had replacements once since I have had it. God knows how long that is??? It has shot a shed load of cartridges as well and been used and abused?

Glen.
Same mine are the original ones and the gun is 12 years old, the previous owner never changed them and nor have I, I must have put 60k in shells through it too. I have a 425 btw
